Autumn 2

The Great Fire of London

Our Great Fire of London Day

The children all came dressed ready for our theme day - we had firefighters, flames, Tudor children and bakers.

We began the day bay recapping the events that took place on the Sunday the second of September 1666 (day 1) and Monday the third of September 1666 (day 2). We then found out about what happened over the next 2 days and how the fire was eventually stopped.

We then made our own bread roll or plait. Doesn’t it look delicious!

We wrote questions we would like to as Samuel Pepys - Why did you write in a different language? Did your house get burnt? Then we had a surprise visit from Samuel Pepys and we were able to ask him our questions. We then drew a portrait of him using charcoal.

We discussed how London changed of the Great Fire and looked at a selection of items from 1666 and 2021 and sorted them into the correct year.

The children created a scene of London.

What a busy day we all had.

Day 2 - we learnt how the fire continued to spread across London and that the people began to escape in boats on the River Thames. Did you know that the firefighters made a chain from the river to the houses?

Mrs Worsley told us how the Great Fire of London started on the 2nd September 1666 in a bakery on Pudding Lane. We learnt that the house were made of wood so they burn easily and how the wind helped the fire spread so quickly.

The children have been looking at a range of artefacts, they considered what they might be and what they might have been used for. They then asked questions about each artefact.
