Stone Age to Iron Age

To start the unit we are investigating how evidence in Star Carr, Yorkshire suggests that early Stone Age people were more than just simple hunter gathers looking for food and shelter. We will look at primary and secondary sources of evidence to support our ideas.

This week we asked the question- why did they build Stonehenge? We used evidence to answer the how, when and why Stonehenge was built. After writing a Stonehenge guide for the year 2 children, we made our own Stonehenge out of biscuits. We used the English Heritage guide to explain the different stones and their possible meanings.

Dragons Den-
This week we researched different inventions from the Iron Age period and considered their impact on the lives of the people from that period. In teams we researched the inventions and presented them to the teachers (dragons).

We were surprised that the chariot was invented during this period and not from the following Roman period.

Our items were- sickel, lathe, spear, chariot, a mirror and quern stone

The Mystery of Maiden Castle
This week we had a mystery to solve. 52 skeletons were discovered at Britain’s largest Iron Age hillfort. Archologist first of all believed the bodies were the remains were from a brutal invasion… but were they? The story is a little more complicated, and other sources of evidence have come to light. But do not fear the budding historians in 3/4T are on the case.
