Autumn 2

We talked about what we need to survive , the list included air, food, homes, water, money, toys, family and friends. The children were asked to sort the  pictures depicting these 'necessities' into 'Need' and 'Want'.

After sharing how they had sorted the pictures we discussed what they would not be able to stay alive without. The children then sorted again into their individual workbooks.

I introduced the lesson by telling the children that the Three Bears had run out of porridge and needed our help to choose an alternative healthy cereal. The children talked with their partners about alternative cereals. I gave the children eight well known cereals for them to order from the most healthy to the least healthy. The children then glued their predictions down and shared their why they thought some were more healthy than others.

The children were then given pictures of the same cereals again but this time the amount of sugar per 50g was included. I showed them what  50g of bran flakes looked like. The children highlighted the amount of sugar then on another piece of paper glued the cereals down putting the cereal with the least amount of sugar at the top and the most amount of suagar at the bottom. The y compared this with their initial predictions ( on the yellow sheets)

Finally I physically showed the children how much sugar was in each cereal.

The children ordered the cereals from the most healthy to the least healthy ( amount of g of sugar in a bowl of cereal)

In Science today we discovered how we could further investigate germs. Firstly 3 children rubbed glitter on their hands to represent germs. We then looked at the best way to remove the most germs - a dry paper towel, washing in cold water and washing with soap and hot water. Finally the children sequenced the correct order for washing our hands.

Our next mission was to see if we could monitor how fast germs grow in different conditions. The children put a slice of bread into a bag without touching it, another when the bread had been touched with freshly washed hands and finally a piece of bread touched with dirty hands. We will observe the bread and note what is happening.

We looked out of the classroom window at the trees and talked about  what we could see. We discussed the words deciduous and evergreen. We went outside to look for evergreen trees, plants and bushes. The children  collected one leaf off each species of evergreen plant that we found then returned to class. The children worked in pairs to sort the leaves choosing their own criteria. They discussed similarities and differences.

Finally they chose four different leaves to draw and label with features e.g shiny, flexible, smooth, bumpy, prickly etc.
