Autumn 1: Houses and Homes

Autumn 1: Houses and Homes

During your child's first term at Pendle, we will spend time getting to know our new school and our new friends! We will talk about ourselves, interests and our families. We will discuss what makes us special, our similarities and differences. Our topic this half-term is ‘Houses and Homes.’ The children will have the opportunity to talk about what they like about their home; the people they share their home with and we will also enjoy some Traditional Tales such as the Three Little Pigs in order to explore different types of homes. I look forward to seeing the children grow in confidence during their very first term at school.

Week Commencing 10th October

We explored building houses from different materials. The hair dryer was like the Big Bad Wolf- trying to blow our houses down. We talked about why some houses were stronger and how we could improve our designs. Mrs Govender had fun too!

We have been exploring the artwork of Andy Goldsworthy. We asked, “Can children be artists too?” and of course we can! We learned that Andy Goldsworthy makes his artwork using natural objects found outdoors. We had a go at making our own!

Week Commencing 3rd October

Super storytelling! ❤️

Ted has been exploring in Clitheroe! We looked through his pictures and recreated some of our favourite local places! I was so impressed by the childrens’ library building, with books, clock and bells to chime!

On a very rainy Wednesday, we enjoyed working together to make shelters in the outdoor classroom! We enjoyed making masks to retell the story of the three pigs using our shelters!

Looks like the children have been having fun taking pictures on the iPad!

We explored houses around the world, and discussed the materials used! We had a go at exploring different materials to make homes, and even made bricks using straw, mud and water!

Bricks, sticks and straw appeared in the classroom!!!! It’s the Three Little Pigs! The children are blowing me away with their engagement in our three pigs provision! Super story tellers!

More baking with Mrs Hailwood! More yummy rock buns for us to eat!

Week Commencing 26th September

We have been exploring using all our senses. The classroom was very smelly when we had finished making our potions!

Family Lunch! It was lovely to show our grown ups how amazing we are at getting our lunch, trying our dinner and taking our tray to be washed! We hope the grown ups enjoyed joining us for lunch as much we enjoyed having you!

Local Walk! We used our houses checklist to explore the houses near school. The children noticed houses which had garages, and considered things like, "Does every house have a number?" We also spotted some of the local features near school, such as road signs and different buildings. Thank you to those who were able to volunteer!

As part of exploring the value of number 2, we have been counting out 2 from a collection. The children were so fantastic that once we had represented 2 in different ways, they had a go at representing other numbers too.

Houses! We've worked together to build houses, fairy houses, houses for Fred and excellent towers! We have used our houses checklist to make sure we include any features we want our house to have i.e. windows / chimney etc/

Week Commencing 19th September

Our first ever Learning Wizard! Well Done for always having a go, and showing super enthusiasm for all our learning!

We have started taking part in PE! We changed our pumps! Next week, we will see if we can change into our pe tops and shorts too!

We have learned how to read words. The children enjoyed using the magic wand to tap each sound and blend them together.

As part of our learning all about the number 1, we learned all about a 1p coin. We played a game and when we landed on 1, we took a 1p coin from a collection.

We have been discussing the ways in which our families help us.

We have started to learn Phase 2 phonics sounds. We have played lots of games to helps us practise and apply the sounds.

We have been thinking about our bodies. We named our different body parts. We explored different things that we can do with our hands.

Our very first baking session with Mrs Hailwood! We made rock buns. The 2 groups made enough for the whole class. We enjoyed eating them together and using words like "crunchy" and "chewy" to describe the texture and taste. I can't wait until the next 2 groups bake in 2 weeks' time!

We have started to talk about our families. We took turns to come to the board and tell our class who is in our family. We then drew family portraits of people in our families.

Watching the cbeebies series, "Our Family" has helped us talk about types of family. We have learned lots about Henry's family. He lives with his Mummy, Mama and little sister Sophie. We will revisit this video throughout the week to talk about Henry's family, what he likes to do and how Mummy and Mama help him.

Lots of provision to support our understanding of our new learning, "s".

Number of the week.... it's number 1!

Ted loved coming to ICT this morning! He was so impressed by our super work.

Week Commencing 12th September

We put on our Listening Ears to tune into the environmental sounds around school! We drew pictures of things we could hear to show Fred the Frog back in the classroom.

Plenty of Phase 1 Phonics... matching the animal to the correct sound and lots of 'Fred-talk'. We spin the wheel. It lands on a word, and our challenge is to Fred talk the word i.e. if we land on dog, we segment the sounds to "d-o-g".

Lots of Rote Counting practise! We love the Number Fun song.... "I am the Captain" and join in wonderfully to represent numbers to 8 on our hands. We chose a captain to help us all join in!

We have enjoyed our first ICT sessions with Miss Bowden! Look at our excellent co-ordination to use the mouse to control the screen!

Lots of play as always!

We looked in the mirror to pay close attention to our facial features, and we then selected the right colours to match the colour of our hair and eyes! Some of us noticed our hair can be made up of different colours, and some children wanted to add glasses, eyelashes and eyebrows!

Here we are... a class of 30 superstars ready to do wonderful things in RZ! We have each been given our very own carpet space!

We listened to the story, "Our Class is a Family" and talked about how our class (RZ) is like a family too! I explained that other grown ups don't know who is in the RZ family so suggested we paint them some pictures to display in our classroom. The children have made a wonderful start at drawing their heads, and choosing a paint to match their skin tone. Tomorrow, we will begin to add more features.

Whilst half of the class went to ICT with Miss Bowden, the other half of RZ had lots of fun playing and talking about what they did at the weekend.

Our First Week at School!

We practiced our fine motor skills to use a pencil and create first day pictures.

We have learned about Repeating Patterns and worked with Mrs Varo Clement to create our own repeating pattern photo frame.

Lots of opportunities for us to practise our counting skills!

We have practiced our cutting skills to create Listening Ears for a listening walk we will take part in next week! The Listening Walk story helped us in tuning into the sounds around us!

We have enjoyed making marks using the stamping pads and ink. Some of had a go at printing our names!

And of course... lots (and LOTS) of play! It has been lovely to see the children familiarise themselves with our classroom, making new friendships and demonstrating our school rule of being respectful.

We have been introduced to our Pendle school rules, and are working so hard to show these at all times!

Here are some of the stories we have enjoyed this week...
