Wheels and Axles

Testing and evaluating. We took our carts in to the playground to see how well they worked. We needed to make a few repairs, this enabled the children to suggest improvements to their carts and how they could adapt them. ,‘Next time I would use a straw because the axle did not move well in the peg.’ ‘ My cart moved fast because it had small wheels.’

Making process. The children used a hacksaw to cut the dowel to the correct size for their chassis. They attached their axle holders using glue or tape. Finally they added some string to pull the cart along, they could use a hole punch, sellotape or stapler to attach their string.

Once the children had investigated and evaluated the different types of axle holders, they designed their own product for Peter Rabbit. Their product must have wheels, an axle, an axle holder and a chassis to enable Peter Rabbit to carry lots of fruit and vegetables. The children chose from a select of containers and drew their design. They labelled the equipment they needed to make the axle holder.

The children investigated different types of axle holders: pegs, cotton reels and straws.

The children have enjoyed exploring different construction products and making a wheeled product.
