Welly Wednesdays

Tuesday 4th May

Today, we explored different movements to retell this week's story "Snail Trail." We read each page at a time and thought of places we could go to to help us retell this part. Each time, we added it onto our retelling.

Slimy snail set out on a trail one bright and sunny morning...

Up a hill, very steep.

Through a tunnel, very gloomy.

Into a forest, very quiet.

Over a bridge, very high.

Down a slope, very slippery.

Through the arches, very narrow.

Past the flowers, very pretty.

Tuesday 20th April

Following on from our minibeast poems, today we went outside to look for minibeasts and then draw our favourite to innovate the poem. The children had to think about the movement of each minibeast. We also used clay to model our own minibeasts. We needed to think about it's features, such as wings, legs etc.

Tuesday 13th April

Today, we enjoyed a minibeast-filled afternoon! We spent a long time in the Wildlife Garden completing a selection of minibeasts tasks. This involved hunt, log-turning, tree shaking and drawing pictures of the minibeasts that we found.

Wednesday 17th / 24th March

Spring was our focus for Welly Wednesday! We took the iPads on a Spring Walk and then sat in the glorious Spring sunshine in the Outdoor Classroom to use pastels and create a Spring picture!

Wednesday 10th March

Wednesday was a very wet Welly Wednesday! We were desperate to spend time in our wellies in the puddles! So, we decided to create our own boats! We used different junk modelling materials to make our boats and we thought hard about different features such as a sail, or windows. We then took our boats out into the great big puddle and set them to sail. We thought about which materials worked the best in the puddle - they needed to be waterproof and strong.

Wednesday 2nd December

We listened to the Christmas story of Mary and Joseph. As we listened, we spoke about what each character might say at each point of the story - “I didn’t know I was having a baby.” We then acted the story out around the Wildlife Garden and all walked like Mary would have walked all the way to Bethlehem! Everybody enjoyed playing different parts from the story, and it got us all very excited for our own Christmas nativity. (Pictures/Videos to follow)

Wednesday 25th November

Today, we worked with a partner to collect various items in the Wildlife Garden. We took our items and experimented different ways to sort them in the balance scales, as this is what we have been learning about in Maths. We spoke about what we could add to make one scale heavier, such as a stick or a pebble and discussed how we know which scale is the heaviest.

Tuesday 17th November

This week, we enjoyed "Tog Up Tuesday" instead of Welly Wednesday. Like always,we popped on our wellies to venture into the Wildlife Garden. Then, we searched for signs of the Evil Peas! We found LOTS of vegetables and suggested that they may have been trapped by the peas! We then enjoyed a story about the Evil Peas.

Wednesday 11th November

As part of our learning about Diwali, we collected different natural objects outside to use in our own Rangoli patterns or Diwali decorations. "The decorations lit the path because it was dark when they went home."

Wednesday 4th November

Today, we had our own Bonfire celebrations. We collected all sorts of leaves and sticks for a bonfire, we learned about Guy Fawkes and then we ate our edible sparklers and sang Bonfire songs. We had a great time!

Wednesday 21st October

We continued with our theme of friendship this week during Welly Wednesday. After we enjoyed the 'mud slide' so much last week, we decided to have another go. This time, we spoke about how we take turns and set ourselves a challenge to see how many of our friends can we help, and how we can kindly encourage others to reach the top! We also spent time exploring the Wildlife Garden with our friends, and using natural objects to make pictures of our friends.

Wednesday 14th October

Today, our focus was 'sticks'. We listened to the "Stick Man" story, and all discussed what we could make from sticks. In the Wildlife Garden, we all collected sticks and took them onto the grass area to create our stick 'pictures'. During our time in the Wildlife Garden, the children spotted a small hill and started to slide down it. Once we had agreed that it was safe and that we would all take turns, we spent a lot of time helping each other up and then sliding down our mud slide. We may have been full of mud, but we were also full of smiles, friendship and laughter! What a wonderful Welly Wednesday.

Wednesday 7th October

Today, we watched a special video all about Autumn. Then, we had a look in our Curiosity Cube at different signs of Autumn - such as orange leaves, conkers, acorns and even squirrels! We put on all of our Welly Wednesday waterproofs and wellies and ventured outside singing the Welly Wednesday song. We walked all the way around school and then arrived at the Wildlife Garden where we had binoculars and magnifying glasses to look closer at all the different Autumnal signs. We even sang a special Autumn Leaves song - I wonder who can sing it to their families at home?

Wednesday 30th September

Today, we read the story "Leaf Man." Whilst listening to the story, we noticed that everything in the story was made from leaves. So, we ventured out into the Wildlife Garden with a partner. One partner had a bag and the other had a clipboard. First, we collected the leaves and different outdoor Autumnul objects and then we placed them on the clipboard to make different leaf creatures! We worked so well in our pairs, we followed the Welly Wednesday rules and our creations were brilliant!

Wednesday 23rd September

Today, as part of our Houses and Homes topic, we watched Aunty Mabel and Pippin learn all about bricks and how they are used to build houses. Then, we listened to the story "The Three Little Pigs" to see what materials they used to make their homes.

After all putting on our wellies, we then sang the Welly Wednesday song and wandered over to the KS1 playground. We worked as a big team to gather sticks which we placed in a big box. We then split into 3 teams of 10. One team built a house out of the sticks we collected, one used the building bricks in the Outdoor Classroom and the other team used straw. We then looked at eachother's houses - great job everybody!

Wednesday 16th September

Today, we enjoyed our first ever Welly Wednesday! We didn't quite put on our wellies or overalls this week but we did take an adventure into our Wildlife Garden. Miss Smith taught us a very special Welly Wednesday song, then we spoke about the special Welly Wednesday rules.

Before going outside, we listened to the story, "The Listening Walk" and practiced using our Listening Ears. When we were in  the Wildlife Garden, we played some different listening games. We closed our eyes and spoke about the different things we could hear. It was really important to use our Listening Ears.

We all had a great time!
