Grace Darling - re-enacting her bravery and courage!

The Story of Grace Darling | Primary History | BBC Teach

Famous Victorian Grace Darling and her brave sea rescue off the Farne Islands in 1838. Grace Darling is remembered for the rescue she undertook with her father in the Farne Islands in 1838. The SS Forfarshire had broken up on rocks within sight of the lighthouse at Longstone, which was home to Grace and her parents.

We had fun making magic potions. We described the objects we found for our potions and used our imaginations to think what magic would happen.

We are learning about adjectives to describe things. We played I spy to describe the fish in our story, then on an adjective adventure outside to describe what we could see. When then had a list of all the adjectives we could think of... what superstars!

In the theme on fish, we had a go at holding a real fish... a herring. We discussed what we knew, watched a video find out more and then added adjectives to describe how it looked, felt and smelt! The children then created excellent drawings of fish.

Week 3

We have been exploring the artwork of Henri-Edmond Cross. We discussed the idea of a “method” and how this is the way an artist creates their art. Henri’s method is to create tiny dots of colour. We identified ways we could make tiny dots of colour, finding sticks and turning the paintbrushes upside down. We practised painting tiny dots ready to apply the skills tomorrow.

Patricia taught us all about why the church is a special place for Christians. Merle, who has been coming to St Mary's since she was only 4, told us why St Mary's is special to her. Patricia showed us a special cross, and let us go on a cross hunt around the search... there were so many! She reminded us the cross is a holy symbol to Christians as it reminds them that Jesus loves them. She also lit a candle and explained that this represents Jesus' light and guidance. She read us a Bible story and prayer.

The children were a credit to Pendle during our Church visit - all superstars!

All aboard the holiday bus! Where shall we go today?

Week 1

A busy term already!

Exploring in our wonderful wildlife garden.

In Music, we have been exploring action songs, discussing why actions are important to help us learn songs and to help deaf people understand what the song is about. We learned that Makaton is like a special language of actions. We watched the Signing Hands song below without any sound and watched the signs to help us predict what the song was about. We then listened with sound and joined in with the actions. We then made our own actions for “If you’re happy and you know it.”

Makaton - FIVE LITTLE MONKEYS SWINGING IN A TREE - Singing Hands

We are “I can see sentence experts!

Hand printing to create a seascape!

We spoke about different places we have or could visit on holiday! We then looked at different holiday posters and then focussed on using the question hand to ask questions about holidaying there. We then used the question hand to help us ask each other questions about holidays.

We have been practising our recall and recording skills within addition.

In Magic Maths, we have been introduced to a Rekenrek. We have been representing numbers, and using the two rows to solve addition problems.

We are focussing on growing and changing within PSED this half term, and began by recapping how we change as we grow and what we are able to do as a baby, toddler and child. We then wrote what we would like to do when we are a grown up!

Sharing and writing about our holiday news.

We love a busy classroom! It has been so busy today with the children ready and raring to begin our final term in Reception!
