What makes a Community?

Today we have really enjoyed finding out about what it means to live in a community, we had brilliant discussions about the community we live in and how we are part of more than one. We know we can be a part of many different groups or communities at the same time. Many of us are members of clubs, or we live in the same neighbourhood as other people.

We recognise that being a part of different communities is a great way of making new friends, learning new things and sharing ideas. There are lots of different communities all over the United Kingdom.

We looked at different families for example, blended families, multiracial families, extended families, single-parent families and foster families. We then thought of our own families and made a paper chain family. We are going to use these as part of our community classroom display.

We used First News newspapers from our Reading Area. We cut out pictures and glued them onto letters to make the word 'Community. We are creating a classroom display about what we have learnt.

As members of a community we can help each other and work to make our community a safe and happy place. We worked collaboratively in pairs to plan and design an ideal community. We considered all members of the community. We thought about their needs and likes. We tried to make our communities as inclusive as possible.
