Autumn 1

We have started this unit asking ourselves the questions- What is the environment and how can we care for it?

We researched how we use electricity- considered how electricity is currently generated and if these methods are sustainable. The children were surprised to learn that many of the fossil fuels that are currently used to make electricity, will have been depleted by the time they are in their 40’s.

We explored what it actually meant to reduce, reuse and recycle. We had some great discussions about what we can do to improve our environment and how the 3’rs can help make Clitheroe an even better place to live.

Reduce-Reuse-Recycle

We made some posters to try to persuade parents to reduce waste, and if they can’t reduce then reuse and if all else fails we should try to recycle our waste.

In geography this week we carried out some fieldwork. We wanted to find out where exactly we can recycle in Clitheroe. We wondered if there were enough bins? Where there were bins, could we recycle our rubbish? We concluded that although there were enough general waste bins, the waste was likely to all go to landfill because there are very little recycling opportunities in Clitheroe.

After carrying out our fieldwork last week, the children were frustrated at the lack of recycling bins in Clitheroe. They were disappointed that of the 31 bins we saw only 2 were recycling bins- meaning the rubbish in  27 out of 31 bins will go straight to landfill. We discussed the impact this would have upon the environment and how this was not a viable sustainable option. The children decided to write letters to the Mayor, Clitheroe Town Council and King Charles, letting them know of their concerns.
