Autumn 1

Materials

The children have been using a Venn diagram to sort the objects according to their properties.

Harry the mouse has had a flood! He needed our help. The children have conducted their own experiment to find out which material is the best for absorbing up water. First they predicted which material they thought would be absorbent, which one they thought would not be absorbent and one that they were unsure about. Next they tested their materials and discussed their results.

The children have been investigating to find out which materials are waterproof. The children predicted which objects they thought would be waterproof.

They conducted an experiment to test the materials.

The children recorded their results, putting a tick for waterproof and a cross for not waterproof. The results were then used to create a class table of results.

The children went outside to investigate what materials they could find. The tyre park is made from rubber. The red bench is made of metal. the fence is made from wood and metal. the window is made of glass.

The children were given a set of objects to sort how every they wanted. EC sorted them by colour, OH sorted them by shape. They were then asked to sort the items by the material they were made from.

The children were shown three spoons and asked: What is the same? What is different? They are all spoons - JB. They are all different colours - LP. They are different sizes - AH. One is wood, one is metal and one is plastic plastic - EC.
