Sustainability

At Pendle, we’re passionate about inspiring and educating pupils to be able to make sustainable, climate-considerate choices.

Sustainability Leads

Miss Zak (Science Lead)

Miss DeRosa (Geography Lead)

We are searching for Eco-Champions to support our school on our Sustainability Journey.

We have developed a Climate Action Plan which focuses upon the following areas:

Curriculum

How can we ensure our children have opportunities to learn about and demonstrate their understanding of Sustainability?

Campus

How can we best place Sustainability at the forefront of our school grounds and surrounding areas?

Community

How can we work as, and with our local community to develop Sustainability in our school and the local area?

Culture

How can we ensure children are surrounded by and inspired to make Sustainable choices?

Within each of these areas, we have considered Sustainability with regards to each of the following:

Decarbonisation
e.g. calculating and taking actions to reduce carbon emissions, such as becoming more energy efficient

Examples of this include Meat Free Mondays, our donated clothes sale rail.

Adaptation and Resilience e.g. Taking actions to reduce the risk of flooding and overheating.

Examples of this include recycling, being mindful of water usage.

Improving the Environment and biodiversity e.g. engaging with the National Education Nature Park.

Examples of this include development of our Wildlife Garden.

Climate education and green careers e.g. Ensuring the education you provide gives knowledge-rich and comprehensive teaching about climate change, and that your teaching staff feel supported to offer this.

Examples of this include inviting inspiring visitors into school to share their eco-expert knowledge.

What is Climate Change?

The dictionary definition is:

A change in global or regional acclimate patterns , in particular a change apparent from mod to late 20th Century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produce they the use of fossil fuels.

There are many factors that can make the Earth warmer and colder including:

  • greenhouse gases caused by human activity,
  • deforestation, where more than half of the world’s surface has been ploughed and paved,
  • ozone layer trapping heat closer to the Earth’s surface
  • different types of air pollution which have different effects on the atmosphere.

The challenge of climate change is formidable. For children and young people to meet it with determination, and not with despair, we must offer them not just truth, but also hope. Learners need to know the truth about climate change – through knowledge-rich education. They must also be given the hope that they can be agents of change, through hands-on activity and, as they progress, through guidance and programmes allowing them to pursue a green career pathway in their chosen field (DFE 2023).
