Summer 1: Marvellous Minibeasts

Week 5

 

We have been writing our tricky words on a huge spider today! We had to pick a card, read the tricky word, then write it. 

We have been reading words with digraphs in this week in guided reading, such as quack. We have also been practising reading words with 4 phonemes, such as hunt. We did a great job! 

We have used chalk to make our very own spirals and snails! 

We have been learning all about measure in maths. We had a challenge to build the tallest tower today! 

We have also been comparing weights, using the language of heavier, lighter, heaviest and lightest. 

Inspired by our learning about bees, we have been making our very own bees! 

We have been taking turns today whilst playing a game together with our friends. 

We have been pretending to be butterflies today in our outdoor area!

We have been retelling the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar.’

Week 4

 

We are very excited to have caterpillars in our class! We have been observing them closely and using magnifying glasses! 

We have been using the numicon to make snail shells and talking about all of the numbers we used. 

We drew our very own snails, listening carefully to the instructions. Some of us even gave them a name! 

We have been mark making today! 

We had great fun playing with the parachute today! 

In Maths, we have been learning all about money. We have been recognising the coins and making amounts using 1p. 

We have read the story ‘Snail Trail’ today and we talked about all of the pictures from famous artist. We talked about what we liked and why. We then made our very own snails in the style of Henry Matisse. 

We have been making snails and spirals using the play dough! 

In ICT, we have been drawing pictures of different Minibeasts! We had to choose an appropriate background and think carefully about what they looked like. 

We have made pet stick insects. We are bringing them home to care for them. We have great plans for the homes we will build for them!

Week 3

 

We have been continuing our learning all about Minibeasts. We explored printing with Minibeasts in the play dough. 

We read the story ‘The very busy spider’ and a non fiction book about spiders too. We created our own spiders and spider webs! 

In maths, we have been learning all about numbers to 20. We have talked about what they are made from, such as 10 + 4 makes 14. 

Today, we had some Minibeasts and exciting animals visit us at school! We learnt lots of facts and were very brave to hold some of the animals! 

We have been creating our very own VE Day decorations, ready to celebrate on Thursday! 

We had a fabulous time celebrating VE Day! We took part in lots of activities including singing, crafts, biscuit decorating, outdoor game and making our own medals! 

We have been looking at wood and sticks. We made bug houses from bundles of sticks. We painted with sticks. We found objects made from wood and compared them to the sticks and logs.

We have some caterpillars in the classroom. We are going to watch how they grow and change.

Week 2

 

Following our guided reading sessions, we have been enjoying using our reading glasses to read our guided reading books during learning choice! 

We have been counting carefully to add legs to our spiders 🕷️ 

In maths, we have started learning about numbers to 20. We have been making the numbers using our tens frames to help and then having a go at writing the numerals too. 

We have been learning how to play hopscotch this week! 

Week 1

 

We started this week enjoying the lovely blossom tree at school! The petals were showering down like spring snow! 

We have been creating our own blossom pictures inspired by the blossom outside! 

We learnt about the Christian celebration of Easter. We read the Easter story and the talked about why eggs are a symbol of Easter. We then decorated our own eggs, counted eggs and even made our own bunny ears! 

In maths this week, we are learning to recognise numbers to 20, as well as counting forwards ans backwards to 20. We had a challenge to put the correct number of petals on each flower, counting carefully. 

We have started learning all about Minibeasts. We have enjoyed naming and recognising different ones, such as a grasshopper and a centipede. 

We have been ordering numbers to 10. 

We have been identifying numerals to 20 and colouring our pictures with the correct colour.

We have looked at dandelions and learnt about their life cycle.
