Spring 2: Yum, Yum!

Week 6

We painted our clay tiles from last week, thinking carefully about the choice of colour to match our patterns.

In maths this week, we are learning about time. We started by ordering events and using language such as first, next and after.

We have been using our reading fingers to help us read and match captions today!

We have been learning all about Ramadan and Eid. We started by reading the story ‘Moon’s Ramadan’ and then we compared Eid to other celebrations and talked about the similarities and differences.

We have been practising our fine motor skills including our cutting skills by creating African inspired necklaces!

Week 5

This week, we read the story ‘Handa’s surprise.’ We looked at the patterns we could see in the story, both on people’s clothes and on the animals. We made our own patterns too!

We had a visit from local artist, Frankie Freeman, where we created our own pattern tiles with clay inspired by our learning about Africa.

In music, we have been practising and performing our musical stories! We chose a nursery rhyme and then carefully chose instruments which we thought would be suitable.

We have been learning all about the continent of Africa this week. We looked at Africa on a map and identified the land, sea and desert on the maps too. We learnt that Africa is a hot country and found out about some of the fruit and vegetables that grow there, as well as animals that live there. We have also enjoyed singing this song all about the continents.

Seven Continents Song

We have been busy preparing our bunny ears for the Bunny Run on Friday! 🐰

We had a very windy bunny run today! The children did so well and it was lovely to see them cheering each other on too!

Mrs Davy brought her own show and tell today to share with us! She showed us pictures and told us all about her visit to Africa. She gave us some clues and we had to guess which animal she had seen!

Week 4

In maths, we have been learning about doubling and how that means the same number added together twice. We made our own butterflies and tried to make sure there were the same number of objects on each side of the butterflies.

We also ‘doubled’ our paintings!

In phonics this week, we are recapping the sounds we have learnt so far. We played bingo today and practised reading the words.

In music, we have been experimenting with the sounds of different instruments and thinking about the mood, character or action they can represent.

This week, we celebrated National Down Syndrome day. We had a special visitor, Amy, and she told us all about what Down Syndrome is. We wore bright and colourful socks, which Amy told us look like chromosomes!

Week 3

We have been trying hard to write cvc words such as pan, tap and net independently. Look at our fantastic writing!

We took turns to turns to play a game together today. We turned over the cards and tried to find the different things on our shopping list.

We have been looking closely at fruit and vegetables and doing some observational drawings using chalk, pastels and watercolours.

We have been exploring printing using various vegetables and fruits. We talked about the shapes and patterns they made too.

In maths, we have been using a tens frame and a part whole model to help us subtract.

We have walked around the school grounds looking for signs of spring.

📖 World Book Day 📖

We went on a hunt around school to find characters from some of our favourite books!

We shared stories with our friends and loved talking about the character we had come dressed as!

We did a book hunt too, looking for items such as a pond, kind and a wand!

We made our own bookmarks to use when we are reading 📖

It was lovely to have our grown ups in school this afternoon to share a story with us!

Week 2

Following on from our work on shapes, today we made some shape pictures!

In the style of the artist Arcimboldo, we made our own pancake faces in celebration of Shrove Tuesday.

Today, we tasted pancakes and a selection of fruit. We talked about what they looked like using words such as bumpy, round and soft. We also talked about what they tasted like using words such as sour, delicious, juicy, sweet and crunchy.

In phonics, we have been learning the ‘oo’ sound, both long (zoo) and short (look). We played popcorn pop in our lesson and some of us even played it after the lesson with our friends practising our build it, blend it, smooth word read it technique.

We have been investigating to see if all fruit and vegetables float.

We have been reading the story ‘Oliver’s Milkshake’. We then made our very own milkshake and wrote instructions such as peel the banana, chop it, mix it.

Week 1

We have started the half term with a cafe role play 🍽️🍨🍝 we have been taking orders and serving the customers!

We have been using our phonics fingers to write CVC words including our digraphs such as ‘’ll’ and ‘sh’.

We have been counting numbers to 20, ensuring we carefully count each object.

We have been learning about 2d shapes this week. We have made our own shape pictures and spoken about the shapes we have used.

We have also been learning about 3D shapes, such as cubes and cuboids. We found things in our classroom and explained to our partners what shape we had and how we knew.

We have been baking bread. We learnt all about the importance of yeast and watching what happened to our dough when we added it. We also kneaded our dough carefully.

Some of the children worked together as a team to build a lovely house in our outdoor area.

This week in phonics, we have been practising our tricky words ‘are’ ‘her’ and ‘like’. We have also been writing words with ‘oa’ and ‘igh’.

We have been looking closely at different fruits. We looked inside the fruits to see if they were the same colour on the inside as the outside. We compared the seeds. Some fruits had lots of little seeds other fruits had one big seed. We tasted mango , cucumber, grapefruit and pomegranate. We thought they were colourful, delicious, sweet, juicy and sour.

In Art, we studied the artist Arcimboldo. He used fruit and vegetables in his portraits, so we did the same!
