Freestanding Structures

To start of out topic we looked at famous designers and inventors of playground equipment, towers, bridges and chairs. We then walked around school looking at the different structures and discussing how the materials were joined together.

After our discussion the children were given the task to construct free standing structures using various construction equipment, including Lego, Duplo, Knex.

They discussed what they had made, adapted them and evaluated them.

The children explored using different joins. The used tape, glue and tabs, and straws and pipe cleaners. We discussed the stability of the different joins.

The children were given the design criteria: build a chair for Baby Bear that is stable for him to sit on.

All the children designed two chairs considering the joins they had practised. The chose on of their designs to build. The results were amazing!

All the chairs were stable and we tested Baby Bear, some chairs needed some adapting and modifying (which is all part of being a designer).

Baby bear was pleased with the comfort and design of all his chairs.

The children then evaluated their chair against the design criteria.
