Autumn 1: Houses and Homes

Week 6

We went outside to collect autumn leaves. We compared the leaves and talked about similarities and differences.

We had a wonderful time having lunch with our parents and siblings in school on Wednesday! The children were so proud to show the adults what to do and where to go!

We have been retelling the story of the 3 Little Pigs this week. We have used the words first, then, next and after to help us order the parts of the story too.

We have been taking turns to complete autumn jigsaws this week!

This week, the 3 little pigs wrote us a letter to ask for our help! Now they have moved out of Mummy Pig’s house, they are missing her toast so they wanted to know how to make it. We talked about the ingredients and equipment that we would need, then ordered the instructions. Today, we made our toast to check we had put the instructions in the right order. It was great fun and we independently spread the butter and even washed our knives afterwards! We observed the changes that happened to the bread as we cooked it and talked about how heat can change things.

Week 5

Exploring autumn colours with giant weaving. We concentrated hard to sew our autumn leaves.

We have being following patterns and making our own houses using lollysticks. We talked about the shapes we could see and also tried to count how many sticks we used.

Mrs Hailwood came in again on Tuesday to bake with Apple class. We thought carefully about why we must measure the ingredients and followed the instruction from Mrs Hailwood carefully.

This week, we have been reading the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs.’ We have been learning some ‘ninja’ words which are special words in the story that we have learnt actions too. You could practise these at home and try to use them in sentences!

This week for our outdoor learning, we went on a sound hunt! We listened carefully to sounds we could hear around us and then took our magical music sticks and went to explore the sounds that different materials around school make. What sounds can you hear on the way to and from school?

Week 4

This week, we have started ‘Dough Disco’. This is a great way to develop fine motor skills and is lots of fun. You could practise this at home too! There are lots of videos on YouTube that you can follow along 🙂

We have been learning all about Clitheroe as part of our houses and homes topic. We looked at maps of Clitheroe and spoke about places that are important to us like the doctors, school, the library and Clitheroe castle! We then had a go at making our own maps, drawing all of our favourite places to visit.

We have loved exploring our outdoor classroom this week. We have changed our role play into our very own school! The children have taken on the roles of various staff members and have also been great students. We have also been creating puppet shows, retelling known stories and even creating our own storylines!

We listened to the story ‘Horatio’s Bed.’ We were very creative when making our own bed designs for Horatio’s friends

On Monday, we embraced the rainy weather, put our wellies on and went outside to explore the puddles with boats 🌧️ 🚤 we talked about floating and sinking and even had some boat races!

This week, we had bananas for our snack. We tried to independently open our bananas which was quite tricky! Some children even helped their friends which was so lovely 🙂

Week 3

This week, we have been learning the sound ‘s’. We made some spirally, springy snakes to remind us of the ‘s’ sound!

We learnt the ‘t’ sound and made towers to help us remember it.

We looked at photos and talked about different homes from around the world.

We have also been making our own faces using loose parts. We talked about our eyes, hair, noses, mouths and chins. What wonderful creations!

On Tuesday, Mrs Hailwood came in to bake with some groups of children. Over the next few weeks, everyone will get a turn. It was great fun mixing all the ingredients together to make our rock buns and we talked about what happens to the mixture when we bake it in the oven! We even had fun cleaning and washing up afterwards! At snack time in the afternoon, we got to share the freshly baked rock buns which was a delicious treat!

Week 2

We have had a great time getting to know everyone and exploring our classroom together!

We read the story 'Our Class is a Family' and we have talked about how we can all look after each other. It has been wonderful to see the children being kind and caring to each other!

We have also explored our school rules of Ready, Respectful and Safe and what that means in school.

Self Portraits

We have been looking carefully at our features to create our very own self portraits. We did a great job of choosing the correct colours and thinking carefully about the shapes of things. We will use these to make a class display of our family.
