Disability badge

We are thrilled to have achieved our  Disability badge. We have worked hard this year and have focused on the following :

  • Ensure that disabled people are represented in a positive and constructive way across the curriculum and the school.
  • Remember that a person with a physical or sensory impairment will have alternative ways of doing things and may not miss the use of limbs or sense others rely on.

  • Involve the pupil, their family and relevant support professionals in determining learning goals and how best to support learning. Remember that learning how to make or keep friends or how to negotiate with others are life skills of vital importance.  Keep the pupil at the centre of this process.

  • Make sure that all staff focus on supporting learning, rather than on task completion, and feel equally responsible for ensuring all young people are adequately supported to guard against social isolation.

  • Maintain a bank of ideas that have been used in each year group, subject or topic .

  • Maintain high expectations of all pupils and ensure that the learning and participation of disabled pupils is considered as important as that of non-disabled pupils in the school.

  • Ensure that all staff consistently challenge disablist bullying and any indication of prejudice or harassment.

  • Ensure that the behaviour and anti-bullying policies specifically mention what reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled pupils.

  • Celebrate disabled identities throughout the school year: for example mark the International Day of Disabled People and engage with UK Disability History Month.

  • Help everyone in school understand individual differences in the context of similarities between people.
