This week's spellings are words from the year 5 and 6 spelling list.

This week, our spelling focus is on adding the suffix -ly. The children have met this before in Years 3 and 4, and we are revisiting it to build confidence and clear up any confusion. We will look at how words can change when -ly is added, such as when to change a ‘y’ to an ‘i’ or use -ally.

We are also linking this to grammar, learning how adjectives can become adverbs (e.g. quick → quickly) and how these can be used in fronted adverbials to improve writing. Through fun activities, including drama, children will practise using these words in meaningful and engaging ways.

This week, we are learning how to use apostrophes for possession, especially with plural nouns.

A possessive apostrophe shows that something belongs to someone.

    Singular possession

    (Add ’s)

    • Daisy’s phone
    • The class’s computer

Plural possession (more than one person/thing)

    • If the word already ends in s, add just ’
      • The teachers’ car park
    • If the plural does not end in s, add ’s
      • The children’s playground
      • The men’s clothes
