In Spring 1, our learning will take us on an exciting journey through different subjects. In History, we will explore the fascinating world of the Ancient Egyptians, discovering their incredible achievements and way of life. In Geography, we will dive into the vibrant Rainforest, learning about its layers, wildlife, and importance to our planet. In Design and Technology, we will develop our sewing skills by creating our very own pencil cases. In Art, we will take inspiration from Egyptian art to produce creative and colourful pieces. Finally, in Science, we will investigate the topic of Sound, exploring how it is made and how it travels. It’s going to be a fantastic term full of creativity and discovery! Keep looking in each week to stay up to date with our learning.
In Maths, year 3 children have been developing their understanding of fractions by learning how to find fractions of amounts. They have been exploring how to divide numbers into equal parts and use this knowledge to work out fractions.
Year 4 children have been continuing their work on the place value of decimal numbers. They have been learning how to order numbers up to two decimal places and have practised dividing numbers by 100. The class has worked hard to understand how digits move when dividing and how to compare decimal values accurately.
This week in English, we have been learning all about persuasive adverts! The children explored a range of advertising techniques by looking closely at adverts on TV and in magazines. We discussed how advertisers use catchy slogans, powerful images, and persuasive language to make their products appeal to us. After becoming advertising experts, the children had a go at creating their own persuasive adverts. Would you buy our products? We think you just might!
In Maths, Year 4 have been exploring place value, with a particular focus on understanding tenths and hundredths. The children have been learning how these decimal values relate to fractions and how to represent them in different ways. They have shown great progress in recognising and working with these equivalences!
This week we have been having fun practising our spellings by playing a variety of games. Please remember to check the spelling lists on the homework folder page so you can continue practising these at home. Your support makes a big difference—thank you!
In Music, our Year 3 children have been working hard on recognising and naming note rhythms both by ear and from written notation. They have been exploring minims, crotchets, and quavers, and using these notes to create their own rhythmic patterns. The children particularly enjoyed composing rhythms inspired by our current classroom topics, showing great creativity and confidence as young musicians.
This week, the children had an exciting fitness session with Drumz Aloud! They absolutely loved the experience and threw themselves into the energetic routine. The session challenged them to follow the beat, coordinate their movements, and work together—all while having great fun. It was wonderful to see everyone so engaged and enthusiastic!
In DT this week, the children have been practising their sewing skills! We have been learning two key stitches — the running stitch and the backstitch. The children have shown wonderful concentration and perseverance as they have learnt how to thread a needle and sew with increasing independence. We are looking forward to using these skills in our upcoming DT project!
In RE, the children have been learning about the significance of the Five K’s in Sikhism. We explored what each of the Five K’s represents and why they are important to Sikhs today.
This week in DT, the children have been exploring and evaluating a range of existing products, including wallets, purses and pencil cases. We have looked closely at the different materials used and discussed their properties—for example, which materials are waterproof. The children also investigated a variety of fastenings such as zips, Velcro and buttons. They compared how easy each fastening was to use and how suitable it would be for different types of products. This will help the children begin to think like designers, understanding what makes a product effective before creating their own later in the unit.
In Art, the children have been busy designing their own Egyptian scrolls. They explored how the Ancient Egyptians used images to communicate important information and thought carefully about how to represent their own ideas using symbols, colour and composition. The class looked closely at the key features of Ancient Egyptian artwork—such as repeated patterns, hieroglyphic-style markings, and the use of profile figures—and used these inspirations to guide their own creative choices. The children have shown fantastic creativity and attention to detail, and we’re looking forward to sharing their completed scrolls with you soon!
In English, the children have been taking part in a range of activities based around the film A Matter of Loaf and Death. We have explored key vocabulary from the story and used it to deepen our understanding of the plot. The children have also been thinking carefully about the characters’ thoughts and feelings, discussing how these change throughout the film. To build on this, we sorted true and false statements about key events, helping us reflect on what happened and why. The class have really enjoyed the unit and shown great enthusiasm in their discussions!
In Geography, the children have been exploring different biomes around the world and discussing where these environments can be found. They have enjoyed using atlases to locate key regions, including the Amazon Rainforest in South America. To deepen their understanding, the children also studied a range of photographs to identify some of the key physical features of the Amazon Rainforest.
In PE, Year 4 have had a fantastic start to their swimming sessions and really enjoyed their first lesson down at Ribblesdale Pool. It was great to see their confidence growing already!
Year 3 have been working brilliantly in pairs to create their own dance routines using disco-inspired moves. We especially enjoyed practising the ‘Grapevine’ and ‘Star’ moves — the children have shown amazing creativity and teamwork!
This week, the children have been practising their spellings through a fun activity called Kim’s Game. They have really enjoyed using the game to help build their memory and spelling skills, and it has been a great way to make learning interactive and engaging.
In our PRSHE lessons, we have been learning about road safety. The children investigated the roads around our school, identifying safe and unsafe places to cross. We discussed the importance of using crossings, looking both ways, and staying alert near traffic. The children also thought carefully about how to keep themselves and others safe when walking near roads.
This week’s history lesson has truly sparked curiosity! The children engaged deeply with the topic, generating thoughtful and insightful questions about sources from ancient civilisations. Their enthusiasm for exploring the past is inspiring, and we look forward to continuing this journey of discovery together.
In Maths, Year 3 children have been working hard on learning to read the time. To finish our unit of work, they completed timed activities to compare times in seconds and minutes. We encourage parents to keep practising reading the time with their children on an analogue clock at home. This will help reinforce their learning and build confidence in telling the time accurately.
