Here is an overview of our learning this half term.
English - We are exploring stories with repetitive patterns and stuctures, as well as practising a range of non-fiction writing.
Maths Units:
Y1 - Geometry: 2D & 3D Shape , Sequencing and Sorting, Fractions, Capacity and Volume, Money & Time
Y2 - Geometry: 2D & 3D Shape, Counting, Multiplication and Sorting, Statistics, Fractions, Capacity and Volume, Money & Time
Science - Everyday Materials. We will distinguish between objects and the material/s they are made from. We will then test the different properties of materials i.e. waterproofness, absorbency.
PE - Dance!
RE - We are continuining our exploration of Christianity and will discuss why Christians see Jesus as the light of the world. We will also learn about Advent and Christmas.
PRSHE - Valuing Differences... What is the same and different about us? We will be exploring our similarities and differences, considering how being kind to ourselves and others is always important. We will explore the concept of bullying too, discussing what it is and its impact on others.
Music - We're exploring how to use our voices and instruments to make different sounds and play simple rhythms in time with a steady beat. We’re also learning to work together and take on different roles when performing as a group.
The following subjects continue over Autumn 1 and Autumn 2:
History - What is history? We will learn about what history is, placing significant life events on a timeline and talking about the past and present.
Geography - What is it like here? We will explore our school grounds, creating and exploring maps before then making our own suggestions for how areas could be improved.
Art - Drawing: We are going to explore and share our opinions on the work of LS Lowry. We will then investigate techniques and effects used by the artist and apply these within our own artwork.
DT - Sliders and Levers: We will investigate different slider and lever mechanisms, practise creating our own and then apply those skills to create our own greetings cards.
In History, we wrote postcards in role as Mrs Nunns. We remembered all the facts she shared about her past holidays when she visited.
An example of an innovated story based on 'George and the Dragon' in English.
We enjoyed learning about the holidays that Mrs Hind went on when she was a little girl. We love learning about holidays in the past in History.
In Science we grouped objects by their properties.
We investigated different materials to see which was the most absorbent.
Year 1 have been learning about a half and a quater in their Maths lessons this week.
In RE, we continued to reflect on the Christian belief that ‘Jesus is the light of the world’. We looked at the artwork The Light of the World by William Holman Hunt which inspired us to create our own ‘Jesus the Light of the World’ lanterns.
In Art, we looked at L. S. Lowry's paintings and discussed what objects look like in the background and in the foreground. We noticed that objects looked smaller in the background and larger in the foreground. Here is a wonderful piece of Art work:
In Geography, we explained how we felt about the Wildlife Garden and the Calm Corner and completed a questionnaire to share our opinions.
In PE, we have been learning some of the basic moves we will use in our Cheerdance. We had to concentrate very hard.
In Science, we have been thinking about the properties of different materials. Look around you house. Can you find an object, name the object, the material it is made from and describe the material's properties?
In Design Technology, we designed our own Christmas cards using slider and lever mechanisms to make them move!
In Music, we explored dynamics by using hand signals to show when the music was loud or quiet. We also selected and played appropriate instruments to accompany the story of The Three Little Pigs.
Children in Need day. We learnt about the charity and how they support children with different needs.
In History, we have been learning about holidays in the past. We wrote questions to find out what Mrs Nunns’ holidays were like when she was a little girl. Mrs Nunns visited us and shared her holiday memories and showed us some photographs.
Year 1's were learning how to count in multiples of 2s and 5s in Maths this week. We sang a song, chanted as we marched, hopped, skipped and used our hands with a partner to count in 5s to 60.
As part of our English work this week, we reflected on Remembrance Day, learned key vocabulary to write a glossary and created a poppy to wear during the two minutes' silence
In PE, we enjoyed learning Samba moves! Miss Markham thinks we will be the next Strictly Come Dancing contestants!
In Maths Year 1s were learning about shapes. We sorted pyramids and spheres. We thought a cone was like a pyramid but it doesn't have any triangular faces.
In Science we started our unit on Everyday Materials. We sorted objects by the different materials they are made from. Which materials can you find around your home?
In English, we read a range of Firework Poems. We collated verbs in order to describe the movement and sound of fireworks to help us to innovate a poem.
We are studying the artist L. S. Lowry in Art. We worked collaboratively to draw buildings in his style, using tone and shade with sketching pencils.
We drew a simple map of the school Infant playground in Geography and we created a key.
