    This week, the children will be continuing to focus on a selection of year 5 and 6 words.

    This week, the children will be focusing on a selection of year 5 and 6 words, starting by making sure everyone understands and recognises the focus words and knowing what they mean. This is the first step to spelling them confidently!

    After that, we’ll explore different spelling strategies, including:

    • Syllabification – breaking words into syllables.
    • Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check – a classic method for practice.

    This week, we’ll focus on words ending in -tial and -cial. Most of these words will be familiar, but the tricky part is knowing which ending to use.

    Here’s a helpful rule:

    • -cial usually comes after a vowel (e.g., special).
    • -tial usually comes after a consonant (e.g., essential).

    Once you know this pattern, spelling these words becomes much easier! However, there are a few exceptions.

    This week, children will be focusing on a mix of familiar and challenging words, especially in terms of spelling.

    Our main focus is on what these words have in common:

    • Their sound: all end with the /shus/ sound
    • Their word class: they are all adjectives
    • Their spelling pattern: they end in -ious

    To help children understand and remember these patterns, we’ll also introduce related nouns. These will act as clues to help determine whether the /sh/ sound in the ending comes from a ‘c’ or a ‘t’.
