  • Autumn 1

This autumn term, children in Lower Key Stage Two will be exploring a rich and varied curriculum. In Religious Education, we are learning about Hinduism, focusing on the story of Rama and Sita and the significance of Diwali as a festival of light and good triumphing over evil. In Art, pupils will study sculpture, creating their own pieces inspired by the work of Giacometti and Picasso. Our History topic looks at how children’s lives have changed over time, with a focus on the Tudor and Victorian eras. In Geography, we are investigating volcanoes, particularly how they affect the communities that live near them. PE lessons will develop orienteering and teamwork skills, alongside learning net and wall games. In Science, we are exploring forces and magnets, encouraging curiosity through hands-on investigations and experiments.

    Week 6

In English, we began to plan our biography based on the old man from the tin forest. We talked about what we might include in his life and photos we could use to create an infographic based on the old man.

In art this week, we have been learning about the artist Henri Matisse and his colourful artwork. They found out that later in life, Matisse started creating pictures by cutting shapes from painted paper—a technique he called "painting with scissors." The children really enjoyed trying this out for themselves and had fun making their own bright and bold pictures inspired by his work.

    Week 5

In music, we have been thinking about what instruments would accompany the short animated film 'Soar'. The children have been able to reason why they chose the different types of instruments.

In maths, we have been using rulers and straws to help measure different objects and shapes as well as calculate perimeter in centimetres and millimetres.

In French, we have been learning the names of different instruments in French and been using lots of games and songs to help us remember the name of the instruments.

    Week 4

Willow Class enjoyed their delicious treats and raising money for school as part of the Macmillan Coffee Morning.

In PE this week, the children have been looking at different symbols on a map to help them find key features within our school grounds using maps of our school. They are very excited to explore our school next week to find our orienteering markers.

    Week 3

In Geography, the children have looked at the different layers of the earth. The children were able to name the different layers and give some facts about each. We then created our own world to remind us of the different layers of the earth.

In PE the children were in the hall this week for orienteering lessons. We focused on orientating our maps and moving across the room to different points whilst keeping the map orientated the correct way. The children have been very successful with and are ready to take on the challenge of using our maps of school.

In maths this week, the children have been practising their rounding skills of 3-digit numbers to the nearest 10. The children were able to find the multiples of 10 before and after each number and find the midpoint between the two multiples of 10 to help them round.

    Week 2

In English, we have been looking at the rules for when to use a and an on the correct noun or adjective. We looked at words that began with a vowel sound and found that they used an, like an orange or an hour, whilst consonant sounds used a, like a car or a university.

In maths this week, we have been focusing on the hundreds place value column, thinking about exchanging ten tens for a hundred, counting in multiples of 10 and 100 to support our understanding

    Week 1

In English, we have been looking at the story of the Tin Forest. We worked with our partner to create our own Tin Forest Dioramas showing how the forest changed in the story.

This week in music, we explored a range of ballads. The children listened to different examples and shared their personal opinions on the music, discussing how the lyrics and melodies made them feel. We also learnt to identify key characteristics of ballads, such as storytelling through song, emotional themes, and slower tempos. It’s been a great opportunity to deepen our understanding of musical genres and express our thoughts creatively!
