Here is an overview of our learning this half term.
English - We will be exploring, retelling and writing about Traditional Tales. We will also be practising many of the skills involved with reading and writing by recapping our Phonics and rules of writing such as capital letters and full stops.
Maths Units - Number and Place Value, Measurement: Length and Mass, Addition and Subtraction & Geometry: 2D & 3D Shape
Science - We will be learning about our body parts, identifying and naming them. We will then explore the senses they are each connected to and investigate the 5 senses.
PE - Orienteering (Reading and understanding symbols on a basic map). Catching and bouncing a ball.
RE - We will be exploring Christian Stories about Creation, as well as considering why our planet/world is a special place to many.
PRSHE - Me and My Relationships. We will share who is special to us, how they look after us and how we can care for others. We will also explore the importance of speaking to others about our feelings. We will also recap our school rules and learn to apply these within our new classroom environments and routines!
Music - Keeping the Pulse: My Favourite Things. We will explore and practise pulse and rhythms within music we hear and sounds we create.
The following subjects continue over Autumn 1 and Autumn 2:
History - What is history? We will learn about what history is, placing significant life events on a timeline and talking about the past and present.
Geography - What is it like here? We will explore our school grounds, creating and exploring maps before then making our own suggestions for how areas could be improved.
Art - Drawing: We are going to explore and share our opinions on the work of LS Lowry. We will then investigate techniques and effects used by the artist and apply these within our own artwork.
DT - Sliders and Levers: We will investigate different slider and lever mechanisms, practise creating our own and then apply those skills to create our own greetings cards.
We have been making and identifying a number up to 100 in Maths. We used Base 10, bundles of straws and arrow cards to support our understanding.
In Geography, the children have been learning how to use aerial photographs to identify key features in our local area. They successfully located the school, nearby buildings, roads, fields, trees, a car park and houses. They used their map-reading and observation skills!
During our RE lesson, we reflected on how many people of faith believe the world is special and should be cared for. We thought about the beautiful things and some of the problems in our world.
In Art this week, the children explored the concept of tone by using sketching pencils to create light and dark lines. They experimented with pressure and technique to see how tone can be used to add depth and detail to their drawings.
This week, the children explored a range of characters from traditional tales during Monday's English lesson. They worked on identifying the characters and naming the stories they belong to. We even received a mysterious package filled with clues — the children used the items inside to guess which traditional tale we’ll be studying next!
In PE this week, the children have been developing their hand-eye coordination by learning to throw and catch a ball accurately. A fun and active way to build important motor skills!
This week, we have had a wonderful time together! The children in Horse Chestnut have all been superstars! We have enjoyed taking part in a range of fun PRSHE activities to help us get to know each other better. We completed 'Getting to Know you T-shirts', where we shared our favourite food, favourite colour, favourite book, any pets we have, who was in our family and who our friends are. Miss Markham and Mrs Govender talked to us about the rules and routines of the classroom.
In English, we have been practising our writing skills by using capital letters to begin our sentences and full stops to end them.
