Here is an overview of our learning this half term.

Maths Units - Number and Place Value, Measurement: Length and Mass, Addition and Subtraction & Geometry: 2D & 3D Shape
Science - We will be learning about our body parts, identifying and naming them. We will then explore the senses they are each connected to and investigate the 5 senses.PE - Orienteering (Reading and understanding symbols on a basic map). Catching and bouncing a ball.
RE - We will be exploring Christian Stories about Creation, as well as considering why our planet/world is a special place to many.
PRSHE - Me and My Relationships. We will share who is special to us, how they look after us and how we can care for others. We will also explore the importance of speaking to others about our feelings. We will also recap our school rules and learn to apply these within our new classroom environments and routines!
Music - Keeping the Pulse: My Favourite Things. We will explore and practise pulse and rhythms within music we hear and sounds we create.

The following subjects continue over Autumn 1 and Autumn 2:

History - What is history? We will learn about what history is, placing significant life events on a timeline and talking about the past and present.
Geography - What is it like here? We will explore our school grounds, creating and exploring maps before then making our own suggestions for how areas could be improved.
Art - Drawing: We are going to explore and share our opinions on the work of LS Lowry. We will then investigate techniques and effects used by the artist and apply these within our own artwork.
DT - Sliders and Levers: We will investigate different slider and lever mechanisms, practise creating our own and then apply those skills to create our own greetings cards.

    Week 7

    Week 7 - Owl Board

    Week 6

    Week 6 - Owl Board

In Maths, we have been adding by counting on.

Also in Maths, we were using a tens frame to add a single digit number to 10.

In Art, we have explored how Lowry represents people in his artwork. We had a go at drawing people and dogs in the style of Lowry.

    Week 5

    Week 5 - Owl Board

In Science, we have explored using our sense of smell. We used our noses to identify different smells. We also considered the importance of our sense of sight in exploring the world. We discussed how incredible it was for those with visual impairments to use other senses to explore the world. Children noticed how it can feel worrying or scary to not have their sense of sight to help them, and considered how we can help those with impairments.

In RE, we had a Godly Play visit! Our visitors told us all about the story of Creation. We enjoyed developing our own creations after they shared the story.

    Week 4

    Week 4 - Owl Board

In Maths, we have been using a number track and practical equipment to find one more and one fewer than an amount.

In Art, we practised different lines and patterns. Our extra challenge was to see if we could apply what we remembered about creating tone to create different light and dark shades.

In Science, we explored our sense of taste. We described how different foods tasted. We also used other senses such as sight and tough to explore the different foods, using fantastic vocabulary like bumpy and smooth. We recorded our thoughts in a table, giving each food a rating.

We have also enjoyed exploring a range of senses-linked resources, fascinated watching, feeling, smelling and listening carefully.

In Geography, we explored maps and created messy maps of our classroom.

In Maths, we spoke about length and height using words like tall/short and long/short. Then, we have been using body parts to carefully measure length and height. No gaps, no overlaps and count as we go.

    Week 3

    Week 3 - Owl Board

In English, we received a mystery basket with clues inside linked to our traditional tale for the half term! Inside was some cupcakes, an apron, some glasses, a red cloak and a bed. We discussed what the traditional tale might be... Little Red Riding Hood! We each drew what we know about the tale, and explored new vocabulary linked to the story. (Gigantic, path, cottage, sneaky, bellowed and rushed). Ask your child to show you the actions for each word.

In History, we have explored the concept of past and present, learning how to sequence events in order. We sequenced a timeline of a typical day, then a timeline of Miss Zak's life before creating our own timelines. On our timelines, we drew us when we were born,  what we look like now and then out favourite memory inbetween. It was lovely to share some of the memories sent via the Holly Class email with the children!

    Week 2

    Week 2 - Owl Board

In Science, we spoke about our body parts. We enjoyed drawing around each other's bodies and labelling as many parts as we could.

In English, we have explored a range of Traditional Tales. The children spent time using story props, as well as making their own to talk about and re-tell traditional tales which they knew!

The children have been very busy during our Busy Bee time! Our busy bees watch carefully to make sure we are all reading in our busy bee nests! We complete a range of reading activities across the week, such as reading as a group, reading for pleasure in the reading areas as well as different Phonics games.

In Art, we explored how to create tone using art pencils.

    Week 1

    Week 1 - Owl Board

The children in Holly Class have all made a super start to life in Year 1! We have had fun getting to know our new classmates and learning the routines of our new classroom. We have learned all about Holly trees and became super Holly tree detectives to find Holly trees around the school grounds!

We enjoyed making our own Holly art, and getting into the routine of finding/using equipment and working within a group.

We familiarised ourselves with our Base 10 Maths equipment. We had some time to play with the base 10 before using them to represent different teen numbers. We were super at spinning the wheel to reveal the teen number, as well as not playing with our base 10 when it was time to represent the numbers.

Spending time playing and exploring our new classroom has been fun! The children have had lots of creative ideas within their play, and demonstrated our ready, respectful and safe school rules during Learning Choice time.
