This unit builds on last week’s learning, where clues for the 16 pairs of homophones were introduced. As these words sound the same, the focus is on meaning and visual spelling choices, rather than listening for differences.

This unit introduces the remaining Year 5/6 homophones. Children research groups of words using clues to meaning and spelling to help them tell the difference between similar‑sounding words.

The focus this week is on using suffixes (–ate, –ise, –en, –ify) to create verbs from root words that are nouns or adjectives

(for example: active → activate, simple → simplify).

The children are learning that, when adding these suffixes, spelling changes are sometimes needed to the root word. A key rule we are practising is dropping the final ‘e’ before adding the suffix, where appropriate.

By understanding:

• the root word
• the purpose of each suffix
• and the spelling rules that apply

the children are becoming more confident in choosing the correct verb form and spelling it accurately in their writing.

This week in spelling, we are learning about prefixes. A prefix is a group of letters that is added to the start of a root word to change its meaning

(for example: unhelpful, disagree, rewrite).

An essential point the children are grasping is that prefixes can be added to root words without changing the spelling of the root word. This is different from many suffixes, which often do change the spelling.

This week in spelling, we have been recapping and practising key spelling patterns to help embed learning and build confidence.

The children have been revisiting:

• Words ending in –able and –ible
• Words ending in –ant and –ent
• Common homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings)
• Words from Groups 5 and 6 of the Year 5/6 spelling list
