This unit introduces the remaining Year 5/6 homophones. Children research groups of words using clues to meaning and spelling to help them tell the difference between similar‑sounding words.

WB 27.04.2026
The focus this week is on using suffixes (–ate, –ise, –en, –ify) to create verbs from root words that are nouns or adjectives
(for example: active → activate, simple → simplify).
The children are learning that, when adding these suffixes, spelling changes are sometimes needed to the root word. A key rule we are practising is dropping the final ‘e’ before adding the suffix, where appropriate.
By understanding:
the children are becoming more confident in choosing the correct verb form and spelling it accurately in their writing.

This week in spelling, we are learning about prefixes. A prefix is a group of letters that is added to the start of a root word to change its meaning
(for example: unhelpful, disagree, rewrite).
An essential point the children are grasping is that prefixes can be added to root words without changing the spelling of the root word. This is different from many suffixes, which often do change the spelling.
