Spring 2

WB: 16.3.26

Maths

This week in maths we explored the key parts of a circle, learning to name the centre, radius, diameter and circumference. We discovered the important relationship between radius and diameter: the diameter is always twice as long as the radius, and the radius is half the diameter. We used this to label diagrams, solve problems and understand how circles are constructed.

Learning Lifesaving Skills in Our PRSHE Lessons

As part of our PRSHE learning this week, we took part in hands‑on first aid workshops designed to help us understand what to do in an emergency. The sessions were practical, engaging, and gave us the confidence to respond safely and sensibly if someone needs help.

One of the key areas we explored was how to bandage a wound. We learnt the importance of staying calm, applying pressure to stop bleeding, and using a bandage correctly to protect the injury. Everyone had the chance to practise, and by the end we were much more confident in our technique.

We also took part in a practical session on CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). Using training dummies, we learnt how to check for breathing, call for help, and perform chest compressions properly. Although we hope we’ll never need to use it, learning CPR could one day help save a life.

Another vital part of the workshop focused on what to do when someone is choking. We were shown how to recognise the signs of choking and how to carry out back blows and abdominal thrusts safely and effectively.

Electricity NorthWest - STEM learning

This week pupils took part in exciting workshops with Electricity North West! 💡🔌

They explored:
🔹 How electricity and electrical circuits work
🔹 The importance of staying safe around electricity
🔹 An exciting electrical challenge to put their learning to the test
🔹 The different STEM careers and the people who keep our electricity flowing ⚙️✨

🪢 Skipping Workshop

We started the week with an energetic Skipping Workshop, where Year 6 learned new techniques, developed stamina and practised rhythmic skipping skills.

📜 History – Ancient Greek Philosophers

In History, our focus turned to the brilliant thinkers of Ancient Greece.
Year 6 explored the lives and legacies of Plato, Aristotle and Socrates, discovering how their ideas still influence the modern world.

The children then wrote their own biographies about their chosen philosopher, using research to explain:

  • Who they were

  • What they believed

  • Why their ideas mattered

  • How their work continues to shape thinking today

The biographies were thoughtful, detailed and showed how well the class understood these important historical figures.

🧪 STEM Morning – Engineering Radio Towers

A real highlight of the week was our STEM morning with ambassadors from Johnson Matthey. Working in teams, pupils were challenged to design and build the tallest, strongest radio tower using limited materials and a set budget.

Throughout the morning, Year 6 demonstrated:

  • Construction skills – testing structures and adapting designs

  • Budgeting – deciding how to spend wisely on materials

  • Teamwork and communication – sharing ideas and solving problems together

Each group produced impressive towers, and hall buzzed with engineering excitement! The ambassadors were incredibly impressed with the creativity and resilience shown.

🎾 PE ( Mrs Mercer) Badminton
In PE, we worked on developing our badminton skills, concentrating on controlling the racket whilst striking a lighter object. We used balloons to practise, before beginning to use the shuttlecocks.

PE – (Mrs Atkinson)Tennis Skills and Teamwork

This week in PE, we continued developing our tennis skills. The children practised control, coordination and accuracy through a range of fun activities. They are becoming much more confident with rallying and are learning how to work with a partner effectively. It’s been fantastic to see their determination grow each lesson.

R.E.

In R.E., we explored how guidance and teamwork can help us through difficult or unfamiliar tasks in life. To bring this learning to life, we made the most of the sunshine and took part in an outdoor activity that required collaboration and trust.

The children reflected thoughtfully on how sometimes challenges become easier when we listen to others, accept help and offer support in return. There were some lovely discussions about how teamwork strengthens communities and friendships.

English – Persuasive Speeches

In English, the children gave their persuasive speeches encouraging all countries to sign up to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

They practised:

  • using strong persuasive language
  • speaking clearly and confidently
  • active listening while others presented
  • structuring arguments to make an impact

We were incredibly proud of how maturely the children spoke about children’s rights and why they matter.

🌟 WB: 23.02.26

We’ve had another fantastic week of learning and fun!

🧮 Maths
This week we focused on multiplying and dividing fractions. Everyone worked really hard to understand the methods and apply them to problem‑solving tasks. Don’t forget to log in to maths.co.uk to complete your homework and keep practising this skill!

🎾 PE
In PE, we worked on developing our tennis skills, concentrating on hand–eye coordination and control. The children also enjoyed some super fun team games that really showed off their teamwork and determination.

🎭 A Special Treat!
We were very lucky on Friday morning to watch a brilliant production of The Jungle Book. The children were captivated from start to finish, and it was a wonderful way to end the week.
