Spring 2

Our topic this term is called “Animals All Around.”

We will be exploring animals from all around the world, beginning with animals that live in cold environments and linking this to winter weather. As the term progresses, the children will learn about jungle animals, dinosaurs, and familiar animals from stories such as Dear Zoo and Elmer.

As part of our Geography learning, we will be focusing on the weather in the UK. The children will explore different types of weather and how the weather changes throughout the seasons.

In Music, Reception children will be experimenting with creating sound in different ways using instruments, body percussion and voices.

Week 5

Week 5 Owl Board

We’ve been busy creating our very own 3D rainbows! The children have been cutting colourful strips and exploring different ways to attach them — using cellotape, masking tape, staplers and glue. Such a fun activity with brilliant fine‑motor practice woven in.

In PE, we’ve been practising gymnastic skills — straight and star jumps, balancing, and rolling techniques like the egg roll and pencil roll.

In music, we’ve been creating and performing our own soundtrack to The Three Little Pigs. Working together as a group, the children explored a variety of instruments to bring the story to life — from gentle sounds for the pigs building their homes to dramatic effects for the Big Bad Wolf.

Week 4

Week 4 Owl Board

This week we have been exploring the special celebrations of Ramadan and Eid. We learned why the moon is so important and talked about the different ways Muslims prepare for and celebrate these festivals.

We also compared Ramadan and Eid to other celebrations we know, such as Diwali, and spotted lots of lovely similarities in how people come together to celebrate.

The children enjoyed making their own moon crafts and even had a go at building a mosque in the construction area. What fantastic learning and creativity from everyone!

This week in maths we explored doubling and halving in a really hands-on way. The children learned that doubling means adding the same number again, and they enjoyed spotting how amounts quickly grow. When learning about halving, we talked about sharing equally and made sure each group had a fair amount. The children loved using practical resources to test out their ideas and explain their thinking.

After reading Anna’s Amazing Multicoloured Glasses, we went on an exciting colour hunt around school. The children loved searching for different colours in our environment and spotting bright, bold shades everywhere they looked. It was a lovely way to bring the story to life and explore the colourful world around us.

We enjoyed creating beautiful spring trees using finger painting. The children explored mixing different shades of pink to make soft blossom effects and loved seeing how their colours changed as they experimented. It was a lovely, creative way to welcome spring.

Week 3

Week 3 Owl Board

This week the children absolutely loved taking part in our skipping workshop. They threw themselves into practising new skills, giggling their way through jumps, turns and challenges. It was a joy to see their confidence grow as they kept trying and cheering each other on.

The children have been looking closely at real daffodils this week, noticing their colours, shapes and the different parts of the flower. Building on our work about the signs of spring, they created beautiful observational paintings using watercolours, taking their time to look carefully and paint what they could see.

We’ve been busy getting prepared for Friday’s Bunny Run by making our very own bunny ears. The children practised their fine motor skills as they carefully coloured their designs and cut them out with great concentration. Lots of excitement building already for the big day!

Week 2

Week 2 Owl Board

This week our maths focus has been adding. We had lots of fun inside and outside the classroom, joining two parts to make a whole. The children really enjoyed hands‑on activities that helped them understand how addition works.

This week we’ve been on the lookout for signs of spring. The children talked about the four seasons, how the weather changes, and the different things we notice as winter turns to spring. We also explored how plants begin to grow and how animals change their behaviour.

We had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day this week. The children loved spending the day in their cosy pyjamas and enjoyed sharing so many stories together. We even went on a character hunt around school, spotting familiar faces from our favourite books. It was especially lovely to welcome so many parents and grandparents at the end of the day to share stories with us. Thank you for your support—it made the day feel extra special.

Week 1

Week 1 Owl Board

We’ve been very lucky to have Mrs Hailwood in school this week, helping us bake some lovely treats. We weighed, mixed, rolled and then baked our delicious goodies — and the best part was getting to enjoy them with our milk at the end of the day!

We’ve been learning all about Lunar New Year this week. The children explored how people celebrate, compared it to our own special events, and enjoyed the story of The Great Race. Everyone loved finding out which animal year they were born in and taking part in lots of linked activities, from home‑corner role play to jigsaws and making colourful dragon masks.

We explored China this week as a follow‑on from our Lunar New Year learning. The children found China on a map and were fascinated to discover how long it would take to travel there by boat or by plane. We also looked at famous landmarks, including the Great Wall of China, and talked about why they are special. The children then used what they had learned to create their own models of China, proudly adding features like mountains, rivers and even their own versions of the Great Wall.

We’ve been practising our fine motor skills this week by dressing the babies in the home corner for the right kind of weather. The children talked about how the baby needed to wrap up warm because it was cold and windy outside, and they worked so carefully to get the dolls’ arms and legs into their clothes. It was a tricky job, but they showed brilliant perseverance and determination throughout!
