Week 6

A brilliant final week of Spring 1 half-term. We were absolutely thrilled to see HRH King Charles on Monday. We excitedly stood waiting on Chatburn Road waving the flags we'd made and we were so excited to see him drive past. He even slowed down and waved to us! This week we celebrated Children's Mental Health Week. We really enjoyed wearing our slippers in school and completing a variety of activities based on the theme of belonging. This week we completed our Science unit 'Comparing Animals'. I think this unit has been our favourite so far this year. In Maths, we have focused on Number and Place Value. This week we have ordered numbers using the vocabulary least and greatest. In English, we independently wrote stories based on the text 'The Perfect Present' by Fiona Roberton. We loved creating our own little books complete with illustrations. In DT this week, we used felt and we practised the skills of joining two pieces of material. The methods we used were gluing and running stitch. Pine Class would like to wish everyone a happy half-term holiday.

Week 5

This week in English we have continued to write our Non-Chronological Reports. They look fantastic as a double page spread in our English books. In Maths, we completed our unit on 'Time' and we have started the unit on 'Number and Place Value'. We played a brilliant starter game called 'Target 100'. We had a die labelled with 3 1's and 3 10's, we played in pairs adding the score from each roll and aiming for a target of 100. The children had to be careful though not to 'overshoot' otherwise the other player won. Pine Class really enjoyed playing this game! In Art we found out about knotting, threading, wrapping, joining and plaiting. We practised plaiting using wool and string. Some of us found it very tricky but we tried our best and showed perseverance and resilience. In gymnastics, we tried hard to complete teddy bear rolls and a rock and roll toe tap over our head. We are looking forward to Children's Mental Health Week next week and we cannot wait to wear our slippers in class.

Week 4

This week in Maths we have been doing Time. We have really enjoyed using the geared clocks and our knowledge and understanding is developing. In English, we have studied non-fiction texts. We have explored the features of non-fiction texts and we have started to write notes to create our own text, 'All About Ducks'. In History, we have been considering schools in the past. We looked at artefacts from Pendle Primary in the past and we also interviewed a former pupil too. This week in Gymnastics, we moved between six stations, creating the taught shapes and we enjoyed using the mats, benches and hoops. In Science, we considered the diets of a variety of animals. We developed our understanding of the terminology carnivore, herbivore and omnivore. This week we had an amazing time with Drums Aloud too!

Week 3

This week in English, we explored the meanings of lots of new unfamiliar vocabulary from the text ‘Wanted: The Perfect Pet’.  We discussed our ideas about the definition of the words, but also used an online dictionary too. We also thought about the feelings of the character duck and we considered why a duck might make a good pet. In Maths this week, we began our Money unit. We discussed the value of coins, we explored how multiple coins can have the same value as a single coin and we calculated the cost of various items using jottings to help us. In DT we explored existing products and investigated how they had been made. We focussed on the joining techniques. Were they stitched, glued or fastened using a zip? In our PRSHE 'Reflection Journals' this week we thought about who we might like to say thank you to and why. We were so proud last week of our wool wrapping efforts. We really enjoyed using a variety of wool to wrap a piece of cardboard. This week we wrapped sticks, which was great fun!

Week 2

This week we had so much fun during our PE sessions. We started our Gymnastics unit and we practised a range of shapes including, straddle, straight, tuck and star. We also used the benches to traverse and completed log rolls on the mats. We cannot wait to develop our skills over the next few weeks. This week in English we started our new text 'Wanted The Perfect Pet' by Fiona Roberton. We considered our ideal pet and wrote noun phrases to describe it. We also posed questions to one another in the hope of guessing the animal on the cards and we had great fun predicting the main events of the story. In Music we simulated the noise of a variety of animals using a range of instruments. Last week, Mrs Govender came to Pine Class to show us some of her wonderful textile creations. We now feel really inspired and cannot wait to begin the Art unit 'Woven Wonders'. Watch this space for our amazing work!

Week 1

Happy 2026! What a wonderful start to the year in Pine Class. We have worked really hard and we have tried our very best to remember the 'Ready', 'Respectful' and 'Safe' school rules. This week in English we discussed and thought of New Year Resolutions. We had some great ideas, such as trying to read more often, going on Numbots for ten minutes a day and trying to get better at sport. We then moved onto riddles. We found out what a riddle is and then created our own about animals and food. They were superb and we have displayed them in our classroom corridor. In Science this week we started our 'Comparing Animals' topic. This week we identified a range of animals and we grouped them according to certain characteristics. In Maths we have continued to explore Fractions. This week we focussed on quarters and then finding half or a quarter of a set of objects. We enjoyed using resources to help our learning. This week we revised words with the 'silent k' in spelling. For example, knock, knife and know. We completed a range of activities to enhance our understanding.
