Autumn 1

Here is an overview of our learning this half term.

English - We will also be practising many of the skills involved with reading and writing by recapping our Phonics and rules of writing such as capital letters and full stops. We will also explore our first text, The Jolly Postman!

Maths Units – Number and Place Value, Measurement: Length and Mass, Addition and Subtraction & Geometry: 2D & 3D Shape

Science - Identifying and naming a variety of plants and trees and investigating if beans need water for growth.

PE - Orienteering (Reading and understanding symbols on a basic map). Catching and bouncing a ball.

RE - We will be talking about families and exploring why Christians may view God as 'The Father'.

PRSHE - Me and My Relationships. We will explore What makes a good friend? We will consider, how to make friends with others, how to recognise when we feel lonely and what we could do about it, how people behave when they are being friendly and what makes a good friend, how to resolve arguments that can occur in friendships and how to ask for help if a friendship is making us unhappy.

Music - Keeping the Pulse: My Favourite Things. We will explore and practise pulse and rhythms within music we hear and sounds we create.

The following subjects continue over Autumn 1 and Autumn 2:

History - To understand that timelines, photographs and people’s memories can help us learn about the past, including how people and events change over time, what stays the same, and how the past differs from the present.

Geography - To understand that they live in the United Kingdom and can use maps, atlases, aerial photographs, symbols and simple directional language to learn about and describe places.

Art - To understand how to use colour, shape, line, pattern, texture and tone to create artwork, developing skills in mixing and applying paint, and recognising that art can be created in different ways by different people.

DT - Freestanding Structures: Can we design, create and evaluate new playground equipment?

Week 6

This week we completed our non-chronological reports about Clitheroe. They are wonderful! Such detailed information and wonderful illustrated pictures too. This week in maths we explored addition, subtraction and fact families. For example, 6 + 4 = 10, 4 + 6 = 10, 10 - 6 = 4 and 10 - 4 = 6. We really enjoyed using the part part whole models to help with our understanding of the relationship between the numbers. In Science this week we identified and named deciduous and evergreen trees. We went out and gathered fallen leaves. We looked for differences in the leaves' colours, shapes, patterns and textures. We then used magnifying glasses to closely observe the leaves and we discussed what we noticed with our partners. In DT this week we found out about how materials can be joined. We know that materials can be joined together in different ways and that some of these ways are stronger than others and some are used because of the properties they have. We then created a variety of joints, flange joint, L brace and tabs. We discussed the advantages of each and where we might have seen them used in real life.

Week 5

In English this week we found out about the features of non-chronological reports. We studied some examples and identified the features. We have started to create our own non-chronological report about Clitheroe. So far we have completed the title, introduction and some of the pictures we will use. In Maths this week we have been exploring addition and subtraction. We have used part part whole models and base 10 to assist our understanding. In RE this week we considered our role in the family and what we could do to help and show care at home. We created a family 'helping hand' and wrote the tasks we could complete. In Science, we went on a walk around the local area and looked out for wild and garden plants. We then sorted images of these and drew labelled diagrams and identified the similarities and differences. On Friday, we were visited by a nurse who taught us about the importance of good hygiene and hand washing. We found out the correct method of hand washing and how this can help us avoid certain viruses.

Week 4

What a busy and exciting week we have had in Pine Class! In PE, we began with a fun team-building activity where we had to work together without speaking to organise ourselves from tallest to shortest. We had to use our communication, cooperation and problem-solving skills to complete the challenge. We also continued to develop our bouncing skills, focusing on using our wrists and fingertips to control the ball and aiming to bounce at waist height. This week in maths, we used metre sticks and rulers to measure various objects. We know it is important to measure accurately and we are developing our vocabulary when discussing different units of measure. In RE, we explored a range of Christian symbols linked to prayer. We discussed what different symbols represent and thought about how they can help Christians when they are praying. In Music, we have been developing our sense of pulse. We pointed to the pulse while speaking a sound pattern, helping us to keep a steady beat and coordinate our movements and voices. It has also been a very exciting week as we have been learning all about democracy and voting. The children really enjoyed sharing their manifestos with the class and listening to one another's ideas. We then held our School Council Election, using ballot papers and a ballot box, giving everyone the opportunity to take part in the voting process. Well done, Pine Class, for another fantastic week of learning, teamwork and participation!

Week 3

This week in Maths we compared two numbers, using vocabulary such as most, least and equal to compare numbers and we also rounded numbers to the nearest 10. In English, we continued to read 'The Jolly Postman' and we were involved in lots of short writing opportunities such as, writing a postcard to the Wicked Witch and a letter to Cinderella. We also used a Thesaurus in pairs to find synonyms to describe the Big Bad Wolf. In Science, we studied the parts of a flowering plant and then created our own using craft materials. We tried to include the flower, stem, leaves and roots and we labelled these. In PE, as a warm up we made a variety of shapes using our bodies then we enjoyed our orienteering session outside, using the school grounds to go a trail to find a variety of pictures. In Design Technology this week we looked at a range of freestanding structures. We went outside and studied the Trim Trail and we considered what materials it is made from and why. This week we are bringing home our first 'Reading Game Board'. The first board is based on the Julia Donaldson character 'The Gruffalo', we cannot wait to get started.

Week 2

This week we started our PE unit exploring the skills of bouncing and catching a ball. It was great to be able to do PE outside and we are looking forward to developing our skills. We particularly enjoyed a game called 'Bounce Relay' working in teams of four. This week we also started our Music Unit, 'Keeping the Pulse' we used our bodies and moved with the pulse of the music track. We then used our voices too to keep to the pulse saying our names and our favourite foods. This week in English we have started to read 'The Jolly Postman or Other People's Letters' we have written sentences about the Jolly Postman, written a letter to Baby Bear and explored new vocabulary too. In Maths we have continued with our unit 'Number & Place Value'. We have used manipulatives and part part whole models to find different ways of partitioning numbers. We have also used jottings this week to represent numbers. In History we placed photos onto a timetime to discover our own personal chronology and in Art we found out about primary colours and used paint to place these onto a colour wheel.

Week 1

What a wonderful first week back. We’ve had such a fun, busy and enjoyable time. We’ve played games to get to know one another and created our own self-portraits.  We started our unit ‘Number and Place Value’ in maths this week. It has been wonderful to see the children’s confidence using a range of manipulatives, such as base ten, arrow cards and place value counters to represent numbers. We found out all about pine trees this week too. We imagined we were a little bird living in a pine tree in a forest. What was our pine tree like? What could we see from our pine tree? And what animals lived near to the pine tree? We produced some beautiful written work and we are creating a display with this magnificent work. We used watercolours to paint birds and pine cones to add to our display. We also went on a hunt around the school grounds to find a variety of things to match certain criteria such as, green, thin, rough or wow! We really enjoyed our outdoor learning and found some amazing things.
