Autumn 1

Here is an overview of our learning this half term.

English - We will also be practising many of the skills involved with reading and writing by recapping our Phonics and rules of writing such as capital letters and full stops. We will also explore our first text, The Jolly Postman!
Maths Units – Number and Place Value, Measurement: Length and Mass, Addition and Subtraction & Geometry: 2D & 3D Shape
Science - Identifying and naming a variety of plants and trees and investigating if beans need water for growth.
PE - Orienteering (Reading and understanding symbols on a basic map). Catching and bouncing a ball.
RE - We will be talking about families and exploring why Christians may view God as 'The Father'.
PRSHE - Me and My Relationships. We will share who is special to us, how they look after us and how we can care for others. We will also explore the importance of speaking to others about our feelings. We will also recap our school rules and learn to apply these within our new classroom environments and routines!
Music - Keeping the Pulse: My Favourite Things. We will explore and practise pulse and rhythms within music we hear and sounds we create.

The following subjects continue over Autumn 1 and Autumn 2:

History - To understand that timelines, photographs and people’s memories can help us learn about the past, including how people and events change over time, what stays the same, and how the past differs from the present.
Geography - To understand that they live in the United Kingdom and can use maps, atlases, aerial photographs, symbols and simple directional language to learn about and describe places.
Art - To understand how to use colour, shape, line, pattern, texture and tone to create artwork, developing skills in mixing and applying paint, and recognising that art can be created in different ways by different people.
DT - Freestanding Structures: Can we design, create and evaluate new playground equipment?

Week 1 - Owl Board

We've had a lovely first day settling back into school and new routines! We've enjoyed lots of time exploring and playing in our new classroom, seeing our friends and blowing the grown-ups away already!

We enjoyed our first Year 1 Maths activity! Taking turns with a partner, we rolled the dice and moved that many steps along the number track. Once we reached the end of the track, we could put one counter into our tens frame.

Week 2 - Owl Board

We have been learning about our class value, Kindness. We spoke about ways to have a kind heart.

In English, we have been focussing on using word spaces! The children became word space detectives to check for word spaces and sort Holly Bear's sentences based on whether she'd used them or not.

In Art, we explored primary colours and recapped how to use and wash a paintbrush carefully. We when started to investigate how primary colours can be mixed to create secondary colours.

In Science, we became plant detectives! We searched for plants which had lots of leaves, were taller than us, had a trunk! We worked well with our partners to use the iPads to take pictures of the plants we found.

In RE, we enjoyed talking about and drawing our families. We considered how Christians may view God as a 'Father' who can be spoken to through prayer.

Week 3 - Owl Board

In Maths, we have become teen number experts! We have spent LOTS of time practising how to make teen numbers and understand place value (groups of 10, how many ones).

For our SPAG starters, we have been focussing on capital letters.

In English, we took on the role of different characters, suggesting what they might say.

In Science, we have been identifying parts of a plant. Can you remember where the roots, stem, leaves and flowers are?

In DT, we looked closely at freestanding structures. We spoke and wrote about materials we could see and the features we thought might be keeping the structure stable. We also became DT detectives outdoors, looking closely at the freestanding structures in our playground.

Week 4 - Owl Board

In Maths, we have been representing numbers up to 29 using groups of ten and ones.

In DT, we've been investigating the strength and stability of different structures. We completed challenges such as 'make the tallest tower possible' and 'make a structure which bridges a gap.' We considered strategies such as a wide base to add extra stability.
