We are excited to begin a fantastic term full of exciting learning opportunities. In English, we will be exploring the world of fantasy through reading and writing, as well as creating our own poems. In History, we will travel back in time to discover life from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, linking our learning with Art as we study and create prehistoric drawings. In Geography, we will investigate the fascinating continent of Antarctica and find out what and who lives there and how people live in such an extreme environment. In PE, we will be developing our orienteering skills and revising a range of net and wall ball skills. Meanwhile, in Science and DT, we will be exploring electrical circuits and learning how electricity can be used in everyday life.
We can't wait to share all of these exciting experiences with the class and look forward to a wonderful term of learning together!

This week in Art, as part of our Prehistoric unit of work, we have been exploring how natural materials can be used to create pigments and produce different colours. The children investigated a range of natural products, learning how people in prehistoric times made paints using resources found in their environment. They enjoyed experimenting with different materials and discovering how colours can be created from nature.
As part of our Orienteering lessons in PE, we have been learning about the different symbols we might find on maps and what they represent. Understanding these symbols is an important skill that helps us to read and use maps effectively. This learning will support the children when we begin using maps around the school grounds to locate specific areas and focus points.

In Maths, Year 3 children have been learning about Perimeter. They have been developing their skills by measuring the sides of different shapes, counting lengths carefully, and calculating the perimeter by adding the lengths of all the sides together.
In Science, the children have been exploring electrical circuits. They have been learning about the different components needed to make a complete circuit and discussing the properties of conductors and insulators. As part of their learning, the children made their own switches, which they then included in working circuits. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity, teamwork and problem-solving skills as they investigated how circuits work.
In English, the children have been learning how to punctuate direct speech correctly using inverted commas. We have explored how inverted commas are used to show the exact words spoken by a character and practised placing other punctuation accurately within sentences.
As part of our British Values learning, the children have been taking part in voting for our School Councillors. They have enjoyed learning about democracy and taking part in the voting process by casting their votes. We are very excited to see who has been elected and look forward to announcing the results soon!
In Maths, Year 3 and 4 children have been working really hard in our Place Value unit. They have been using Base Ten equipment and place value counters to help them understand how numbers change when adding and subtracting 1, 10, 100, 1,000 and multiples of 10. We are very proud of the effort and enthusiasm the children have shown, and it has been lovely to see their confidence grow.
In Music, Year 4 enjoyed their first recorder lesson with Mrs Bradley and had a great time learning together. The children have taken their recorders home to practise. Please remember to send them back into school every Tuesday for their lesson.

In Geography, we have been learning about the lines of latitude. The children enjoyed using atlases to explore the world and identify the five main lines of latitude. We then worked together to create our own diagrams on the tables, helping us to visualise where these important lines are located around the Earth. We also sang a fun rhyme to help us remember this key learning.
This week in PE, the children enjoyed their first orienteering lesson of the year. They worked brilliantly with their partners, showing excellent teamwork and map-reading skills as they followed the routes and completed the challenges. We were very impressed with their enthusiasm and cooperation throughout the lesson.

In Maths, Year 3 children have been learning to identify multiples of 10 (such as 10, 20, 30, 40 and so on) to support their understanding of rounding 2 and 3-digit numbers. The children have practised recognising the nearest multiple of 10 and using this knowledge to round numbers accurately. This important skill helps to develop their number sense and confidence when working with larger numbers. You can support your child at home by asking them to identify multiples of 10 and practise rounding 2 and 3-digit numbers to the nearest 10.
On Friday, the children enjoyed a fun tennis taster session. They were excited to take part and had a fantastic time learning and practising some basic tennis skills. All of the children thoroughly enjoyed the session and showed excellent manners throughout. They listened carefully, followed instructions well, and demonstrated great perseverance when trying new skills and challenges.

We have had a wonderful first week in Beech Class, and the children have settled in really well. They have been working hard to get to know all of our new routines and expectations, and we are very proud of how positively they have approached the start of the school year. Most children will now have a new reading book to take home. Please do not worry if your child has not received one yet, as all children will have a reading book by Wednesday 9th September. We kindly ask that you encourage your child to read every day and record their reading in their reading diary. We love seeing what the children are reading at home and celebrating their reading achievements with them in school. Thank you for your continued support.

In Art this week, we have been learning about prehistoric art and looking at examples of cave paintings from long ago. Inspired by this style, the children created their own artwork by drawing British wildlife using the shapes, and techniques seen in prehistoric art.
In PRSHE, we have been learning about the Pendle Way and discussing how our Safe, Ready and Respectful rules help us every day. We enjoyed working outside and thinking about the many important ways we can make our school a happy, welcoming place for everyone.
