    WB. 28.09.2026

    Maths:

This week, the children have been practising a range of methods to solve addition and subtraction calculations. They used mental strategies as well as formal methods, including partitioning, counting on, bridging, compensation, and the written column method. The children compared the different strategies and discussed the advantages of each one. They then chose the method they felt would be the most efficient to solve a range of calculations. It has been fantastic to see the children becoming more confident and flexible mathematicians, selecting strategies that best suit the numbers and calculations they are working with.

    P.E.:

This week in PE, the children developed a range of football skills. They practised dribbling the ball with control, passing accurately to a partner and shooting towards a target. Through a variety of fun activities and games, the children focused on improving their technique, teamwork, and confidence when handling the ball. It was wonderful to see everyone showing determination, supporting one another, and developing their football skills throughout the lesson. ⚽️

    WB 21.09.2026

    History:

This week, the children thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Blitz. They created an informative double-page fact sheet, exploring what the Blitz was, when it started and the measures people had to take to stay safe during the bombing raids. The children worked hard to research key facts and presented their findings creatively.

    Geography:

The children learnt about the factors that influence birth rates and death rates and explored how these can affect the population of an area. They discussed how changes in population can impact communities and countries around the world.

    School Council:

Our School Council elections also took place this week. The children confidently read their manifestos to the class, explaining why they would make effective school councillors and how they could help improve our school. Afterwards, we went into the hall to cast our votes. We were very impressed by the confidence, enthusiasm, and thoughtful ideas shared by all the candidates.

    WB. 14.09.2026

    English:

This week, the children have been getting creative with our World War II topic by creating blackout poems and designing evacuation tags. They carefully selected words to create powerful poems and learnt about the experiences of children evacuated during the war.

    Music:

In music, the children listened to and compared We’ll Meet Again from World War II and Pack Up Your Troubles from World War I. They discussed the different styles of music and identified features that reflect the eras in which the songs were written.

    P.E.:

In P.E., the children have been developing their netball and football skills. They have practised accurate passing, movement and interception techniques through a range of fun and challenging games.

    WB. 07.09.2026

    STEM Challenge:

Year 5 took part in an exciting LEGO STEM Challenge delivered by the RAF. Working in teams, the children solved a range of problems, including decoding and writing Morse code, calculating the cost of building materials and designing and constructing a bridge strong enough to reach Volcano Bay. The challenge encouraged teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills.

    R.E.:

The children explored the theme of making choices and discussed what helps people make right or wrong decisions. They listened to stories such as The Hare and the Tortoise and The Boy Who Cried Wolf, identifying the morals and considering how these lessons can be applied to everyday life.

    Maths:

This week, the children have been comparing and ordering numbers. They have developed their understanding of place value by starting with the most significant digit and using this knowledge to accurately compare and arrange numbers in order.

    WB. 31.08/.2026

Year 5  has got off to a fantastic start, with all of the children settling really well. We have spent time getting to know one another while also making an excellent start to our learning. In English and Guided Reading, we have begun reading Goodnight Mr Tom. In Art, the children have started investigating gestural marks, using pencils and wax crayons to create a range of expressive movements and effects. Finally, in PE, we have launched our new unit on orienteering, where the children have begun developing their navigation and teamwork skills. It has been a brilliant first week, and we are looking forward to the exciting learning still to come this term.

In science, we are investigating life cycles. We stated our unit by looking at the life cycle of a plant, including the reproductive stage. We dissected three different types of flowers and compared equivalent parts in different flowers.
