Environmental- Clitheroe

We researched and debated how we use electricity- considering how electricity is currently generated and if these methods are sustainable. The children were surprised to learn that many of the fossil fuels that are currently used to make electricity, will have been depleted by the time they are in their 40’s.

We started the unit by asking the questions- What is an environment and how can we have an impact upon the environment?

In geography this week we carried out some fieldwork. We wanted to find out where exactly we can recycle in Clitheroe. We wondered if there were enough bins? Where there were bins, could we recycle our rubbish? We concluded that although there were enough general waste bins, the waste was likely to all go to landfill because there are very little recycling opportunities in Clitheroe.

After carrying out our fieldwork last week, we decided we wanted to start a recycling revolution. We counted 27 general waste bins between our school and the market, but we were horrified to see only 2 recycling bins. For this reason the children asked to write letters to persuade the council, the Mayor and even King Charles, asking them to support them in ensuring more people in our town have opportunities to recycle and reduce the amount of waste going into landfill.

This week we have been discussing and investigating how we can live more sustainably. We researched different elements- asking questions and finding answers. We then added these questions to a “chatter box’. Parents look out for these coming home and see if you can answer their questions.
