Guided Reading Monday-Friday

Choose a book from the Oxford Owl selection ( within the book band colour your child is currently reading as homework) ... please find the link on the 'Homework' sub page. Share the book with your child, check that they understand the vocabulary and the events that are happening by questioning them as you read together.

Monday

We have been studying the story 'Harry the Happy Mouse'. Play the You Tube video of the story. Make stick puppets of Mouse, Frog, Mole and Bat and gather some props … a stick with string to make a fishing rod, a log (twig), a small hat (cut out of black paper), a hole ( circle of black paper) and a  river ( piece of blue fabric or blue paper).

Ask your child to orally retell the story using the stick puppets and props .

Tuesday

Explain to your child Harry the happy mouse arrived with a note today saying 'I have been a very helpful mouse helping all my friends and now they have helped other animals too but the author didn't say how'

Replay the end of the story of 'Harry the Happy Mouse' ( find a video on You Tube ). Draw pictures of the mole, cat, rat, dog, owl, bird and cow. Model how to write the names of the animals under each picture. Talk about which animal helped who by referring to the pictures in the video. Model how to write ..

The cat helped the rat.

The dog helped the owl.

The owl helped the bird.

The bird helped the cow.

Ask your child to draw a story map replacing Harry the mouse and Frog with two of these characters. How do the new animals help?

Wednesday

Your child will begin to write their innovated story today. Ask them about the other animal characters at the end of the story, who they are and how they helped others. Show them the end of the story again on a You Tube clip to remind them.

Model how to write an introduction.

e.g One day Cat was walking by the river when she met a sad Dog. He was feeling sad because it was his birthday but he had not been given any presents. Dog  gave Cat a bone, Cat was happy and said thank you. 'You don't have to thank me' said Cat,' Just help someone else like I have helped you'.

Re read your writing pausing at certain points, ask how ow can we make it more interesting? What kind of day was it? Has the cat got a name? can we use a word to describe the cat ( e.g.Kitty the Ginger cat) Is there another word we can use that means the same as sad? (glum, unhappy, gloomy, unhappy ) Can you think of a word to describe the bone? Try to think of another word to use that means the same as happy ( delighted, pleased, thrilled).

After your discussion , ask your child to write the introduction to the next part of the story as you have modelled.Help with spellings if they ask. Ask them to sound out the words before writing them.

Friday

Your child will continue to write their innovated story today, 'The Happy Cat' based on 'Harry the Happy Mouse.'  Show them the end of the story again on a You Tube clip to remind them.

Model how to write the next part.

e.g In a little while Dog met an owl. The owl was sad. Why are you so sad? asked Dog. I am very hungry but I have hurt my wing. So Dog gave owl an apple. Owl was happy and said thank you.'You don't have to thank me' said Cat,' Just help someone else like I have helped you'.

Re read your writing pausing at certain points, ask how can we make it more interesting? What kind of owl was it? Can we use a word to describe the owl ( e.g brown) Is there another word we can use that means the same as sad? (glum, unhappy, gloomy, unhappy ) Can you think of a word to describe the apple? Try to think of another word to use that means the same as happy ( delighted, pleased, thrilled).

After your discussion , ask your child to write to the next part of the story as you have modelled. Help with spellings if they ask. Ask them to sound out the words before writing them. Remember capital letters and full stops.

Ask your child to name the material the object is made out of then ask them to talk about the physical properties of the object ( hard, soft, shiny, rough, bendy etc)
