Spring 1 science week

Mrs Carson came into our class to talk about how scientists are helping with conservation in different areas of the world.

Today we did lots of hands on experiments exploring chemical reactions. We looked at what a chemical reaction was and where we might see them in everyday life such as fireworks and burning. We then explored adding bicarbonate to vinegar and observing with our senses what happened. We understood that a new material was formed - a gas. We then used this new knowledge to predict what would happen when we added the solution to a balloon. We also predicted that we could use the new material to help put out fires! Mrs McLeod lit a candle after we had talked about the fire triangle and we discussed how we could remove the oxygen by replacing it with our ‘new material’which put the candle out!
