Geography

A Small Area of the Uk- Clitheroe

We started the unit by looking at where in the world was Clitheroe. We identified the different continents of the world, and the different countries that make up the United Kingdom.

After recapping the seven continents and reminding ourselves of the countries that make up the United Kingdom, we took a walk around the school grounds, looking at what physical and human features we could see on the horizon. We noticed that Pendleton Hill is a physical feature, and that houses were human features.

Physical features- are the earths natural features, they would be there if people had never been there.

Human features- are things like houses, roads and bridges. They have been built but people.

We then looked at some images of the human and physical features from around Clitheroe, we categorised the images into human and physical features.

You can practise looking at and testing yourself on these feature here-

We have been considering how our local geography and community fit into the wider world and global community. We discussed, named and located the 7 continents, and used online maps and atlases to identify the United Kingdom and its countries.

We carried out some fieldwork to look at the human and physical features on our local landscape. We also made links between the maps and aerial photographs we have been looking at, to see if we could find a known place by reading the landscape.
