We are studying the book 'Harry the Happy Mouse' Find a You Tube video to watch with your child up to where Harry meets the frog.

Model stepping into role as the frog. Magic mirror - speaking in role as the frog using the word ‘I,’ e.g. I am stuck on a log. I need help. I don’t want to drown! I jumped up high. I am in the sky.

Ask children step through the magic mirror and in the role of the frog. What would the frog say?

Share ideas.

Draw a speech bubble, model writing what the frog might say to the mouse e.g. I am Frog, I am stuck up here on the log because I jumped up too high.

Draw a thought bubble. Model write inside what the frog might be thinking when Harry the mouse comes along. e.g. I hope that mouse will help me get down from this log. Draw a heart shape. Write inside how the frog might be feeling e.g. The frog is feeling frightened and miserable because he is stuck on the log. 

Choose which of the above to ask your child to complete... speech bubble, thought bubble , feelings heart or all three... depending on your child's  stamina for writing.

 

Guided Reading

Choose a book from the Oxford Owl selection ( within the book band colour your child is currently reading as homework) ... please find the link on the 'Homework' sub page. Share the book with your child, check that they understand the vocabulary and the events that are happening by questioning them as you read together.

Phonics

Play Speed trial, see how many sounds your child can name.

Introduce the sound 'ie'  and say ' ie ie delicious pie'. 

Play Dragon's Den phase 5 , choose 'ie'

Play 'Reading Robots,' child has to segment the word before saying it.

Science

Everyday Materials

Show your child three spoons (one made out of plastic, one made out of wood and one made out of metal) –  discuss what is similar and what is different about them.

Give your child a set of household objects to sort into sets of their own criteria ( they can choose to sort them by anything for example colour, hard/soft, shiny/not shiny etc, let them decide) then ask your child to  sort into criteria that you give them eg plastic/ wood/ metal.

Shared read page 13- 14

Stop and discuss the words ‘rescuing’ and ‘grand’.

Discuss how the frog might be feeling - delighted, glad, pleased, relieved, thrilled, lucky. Model using the new vocabulary in a sentence - I am so pleased that you rescued me. I am delighted that you came to help me today.

Model writing a thank you letter in role as the frog - capital letter for the personal pronoun ‘I’, new vocabulary,  

common exception words - I, the, you, me, your, today

Ask your child  to write a letter in role as the frog to thank Harry for his help.

Continuing with our book Harry the Happy Mouse.

Go to You Tube video of the story.Play from 2.33 until 3.30

Focusing on the character of mole. Discuss vocabulary about what he is doing (actions)

hopping, looking quite sad, big frown, fallen down, jumped with glee, makes you feel grand etc.  Why was the mole feeling sad when he met the frog?

Which word  describes how the frog knows he is feeling sad? What did the frog do to rescue the baby mole? 

How do you know that the mole’s mum was feeling better after her baby had been rescued?  

Which word is used to describe this feeling? Share ideas

Model sequencing the events between the frog and mole and writing three sentences, one for each event

We are beginning our topic on Judaism. This week we are going to look at birthday`s and how they are so so special.  You could begin by listening to the story Kipper`s Birthday - find a youtube clip, Ask your child to think about food, clothes, songs, activities. Are they the same for everyone? Can they draw a big balloon? Write about a party inside the balloon and draw a picture. 

 

Phonics

Recapping ar, ay and oy. Draw 3 columns and write ay, oy and or at the top. Say a word to your child can they write them in the correct column. Day, car, boy, today, park, toy. Read tricky words he, she, me, be, her, are, my.

 

Music

Last week we began learning a rap. Ask your child to chant the rap for you.

I`m gonna sing some songs.

I`m gonna clap some rhythms

I`m gonna play my instrument.

Watch Harry the Happy Mouse video up to 6.27. Stop and talk about the vocabulary.

Identify vocabulary   which relates to Harry feeling sad, e.g. sad, not happy (unhappy), not glad, down, miserable, out of sorts, tearful, upset, glum down in the dumps, fed up, gloomy.

Using the word bank express in role how Harry is feeling at this key moment in the story, e.g. I am feeling…because…

Watch the rest of the story.

Look at each character in turn in the order they appear,

First..., next...., after that..., finally.....

Explain  that we are going to choose some adjectives to describe how each character looks/appears.

Draw each character in turn as they appear in the story ......Mouse,Frog, Mole then Bat and label with adjectives.
