Summer 2

Functions of a Plant

During this topic we will identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots; stem/trunk; leaves; and flowers. We will also explore the requirements of plants for life and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and how they vary from plant to plant.

Today we have been super busy setting up an observation of what plants need to grow and thrive. We considered what we know about what plants need to grow well. We will observe over time to see which factor has the biggest impact.

we have been busy weeding and planting the planters at the front of school with flowering plants and created two herb gardens in the KS2 playground.

We have looked carefully at the different parts of the plants and the role that they play in helping plants to thrive. We observed the plants very closely paying close attention to the the fine details to help us get a very clear understanding.

This week, we are looking at how plants SPREAD their seeds through a process called SEED DISTRIBUTION or SEED DISPERSAL.  We looked carefully at seed heads and discussed how they may be disrupted. We also continued out work creating our herb gardens and flower  planters.

Today we were learning about the Evolutionary Biologist Kelsey Byers. We decided we would working in the style of this famous scientist and do a little field work looking at the habitats that certain plants thrive in. We also looked at the different way the seeds are dispersed.
