Summer 1: In my Garden

Week Commencing 23rd May

We have been busy getting ready for our jubilee celebrations. The children used repeating patterns to decorate their  crowns.

The jewels have fallen off the Queen’s crown. She has no glue in the palace what could she use instead? The children said they would share their sellotape with her. We thought jam would be a good glue because it is sticky, but the margarine was the best glue! We wrote to the queen to tell her the news.

Caroline from the school library service came to read stories to us and our teddies.

Being my Best

We learned about healthy and unhealthy (sometimes) foods. We sorted different foods for Ted’s lunchbox, and made our own fruit monsters to remind us to eat healthily each day!

We thought about why it is important to clean our teeth.

We loved our skipping workshop! A super way to keep our bodies healthy!

The children were fascinated to discover that yellow dandelions are the same type of flower as the dandelion “clocks”, just at a different point of their cycle. We went on a hunt to find dandelions, marking what it looked like on our tally. We had a go at blowing a dandelion and exploring where the seeds land.

Just like blowing the dandelions, we also used our problem solving skills to invent our own bubble wands!

We used tens frames to practise subtraction!

Week Commencing 9th May

We looked at a collection of leaves. Are all leaves the same?

Throwing at a target.

Decorating crowns and building palaces.

The Lancashire Baton! The baton has travelled round lots of schools in Lancashire to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee - we all held it and used words like “shiny” and “smooth” to describe it.

Pendle’s Portrait Studio! Taking turns to be royals, sitting super still and having our portraits drawn and painted!

A special last day with our friends!

Watering our beans, and observing them as they grow!

Addition using 2 tens frames. Super recording!

We are beginning to learn about our Queen. We had a very interesting conversation about what the Queen does, and how old she is! Answers ranged from 21 to 2001! The children were amazed when we counted in ones all the way to 96. We’re looking forward to learning more about the queen over the next few weeks!

Week Commencing 2nd May

We went on a plant hunt - looking carefully to find plants for all the clues.

Team work ordering numbers up the beanstalk.

Week Commencing 25th April

We planted beans.

We all made it to the moon! Our target was to show respectful sitting (showing 5, taking turns). Each of us “zoomed to the moon“ when we did respectful sitting. We had a celebration once we all reached the moon!

PE - practising jumping and throwing!

Miss Sarwar helped us to learn about Ramadan and Eid. We enjoyed lots of different activities in provision which helped us to learn how the occasion is celebrated.

Length and height. Comparing and measuring length and height.

Sunflowers! We practised printing with a sponge, cotton bud and our fingers to create sunflowers. We looked at Van Gogh’s sunflower painting and discussed the different colours and shapes we saw.

We are getting so super at our independent sentence writing!

Week Commencing 19th April

Retelling the Christian story of Easter.

We have been exploring money this week. We have learned the words copper and silver to describe different coins. We have focused on the 1p coin and know that it is a 1p because it is the smallest copper coin. We have had lots of opportunities in provision to practice identifying and using 1p coins.

When comparing 1p coins one of the children noticed that the coin was much shinier than their friends coin. We spoke about how sometimes, coins become dirtier over time. We did an investigation to find out What way is the best way to make coins shiny again. I wonder if the children can remember the different liquids we used for our investigation and which one was the winner?
