Spring 1

Materials

We looked at the different materials that everyday items are made from. We considered what material they are made from and why.

We started this unit by sorting materials by their properties.

This week we have been investigating which material had the most elasticity. We selected three materials- one that we knew would stretch, one we thought was unlikely and another we were not sure about. We clamped the material and then measured it, we then added the same amount of weight before measuring it again.

The children in year 5 were keen to share what they had Neenah learning in science. We also shared with them everything we had found out about different materials and their properties.

This week we had a real problem to solve. We needed to find a suitable bedding for the vets, but the bedding needed to be absorbent so that the animals were not sitting on wet areas.
We thought of suitable scientific questions to ask to solve this problem. We worked as teams to carry out fair tests on the different materials.

This week we had great fun making rockets take off into space (or at least we tried). At first our rockets did not take off so we had to change one thing to see if we could make our rockets go airborne.

And We Have Take Off!
