Science

We have had great fun making and testing our boats.

Is it sand or sugar? We used our science investigation skills to work out which mystery substance was sugar and which was sand. We knew it would not be safe to taste mystery materials but we smelt, touched, observed and then tested to see if it would dissolve in water. We learnt how sand is made. We looked at pebbles and shells and explored pebble painting with water, and made giant pebble patterns.

Exploring pollination with bees 🐝

We have been exploring food chains, including thinking about the food chains in the story 'The Grufffalo'.

Woolly worm camouflage investigation. Which colour worms were the easiest to find? Why do you think worms are brown?

We have been observing plants growing. What can you see?

We went on a nature walk.

Glitter Germs - we used glitter to demonstrate how easily germs can spread. We observed what happened when we put a soapy finger into the 'germs'. 'The germs go away because they don't like the soap.'

Watch what happens when we put a soapy finger into a dish with water and glitter 'germs'.

The Evil Pea has trapped the broccoli in the ice. How can we get the broccoli for Mr Govender's tea without squashing the broccoli? We thought about different ways to release the broccoli by melting the ice. We could take it to Africa because it is hot in Africa. We tested some of our ideas; the microwave, the oven, hot water and wrapping it in a blanket. The hot water melted the ice really quickly. The blanket absorbed the water but the ice didn't melt. What is that we found lurking with the broccoli?!

We made material monster pictures. Can you see some fabric, wood, metal or plastic? We sorted materials by different properties.

After a hole in the roof the little pigs have a puddle to mop up. We predicted which materials would be best at absorbing the water and then we tested our ideas.

Help! The 3 Little Pigs have a hole in their roof! Investigating which materials are waterproof.

We made plastic pictures. Can you see a giant's kitchen or the water and sand at the beach? The plastic felt smooth, some of it was hard.

How many different materials are these objects made from? Can you name the materials? Can you find something at home that is made from two different materials?

We have been looking at objects and talking about what materials they are made from. We took our own photographs. What materials can you see?

We used different materials to create our pictures.

We compared a collection of spoons. we decided to sort them metal and not metal. Why do you think some spoons are in the middle?
