Autumn 2

Healthy Humans

We followed some of the Joe Wicks exercise videos and observed what changes happened to our bodies whilst we exercised. We considered why we exercise, and what are the benefits of exercise.

This week we investigated the importance of hygiene. We carried out two investigations.

In the first experiment we sprinkled some black pepper (we imagined the pepper was germs) in to a bowl of water. We then wasted our hands in just water and then dipped a finger in the water the pepper just stuck to our fingers. We then repeated the test but used soap when washing our hands. The pepper moved away from our fingers.

In our second investigation one child wiped Vaseline on their hands and then wiped their hands. We then put a small amount of glitter (germs for the experiment) on their hands. The child then moved around shaking hands and touching tables, chairs and pencils. We were shocked to see how the germs (glitter) spread.

We started this unit by considering the different things we do to look after our bodies. We discussed all the different things we do that help us to thrive and keep healthy.

As part our ‘Fighting Fit’ unit we predicted and tested which breakfast cereal had the most sugar in. Most children predicted either Coco Pops or Frosties would have the most sugar in because they were either chocolate or sugar coated. The children found out that their predictions were right and that Cron Flakes and Rice Krispies were a healthier option.

Today we discussed healthy diets and the types of food we should be including on our plates. We identified and discussed the different food groups and the benefits of each of these food groups.
