Scotland and Edinburgh
The children used Atlases to locate Scotland then labelled and completed their own maps of different scales with compass directions, the border between Scotland and England and the capital city of Scotland.
The children used Google Maps on their ipads to go on a city flyover tour.
We watched a short video showing all the different types of features and environments to be found in Scotland including lochs, rivers, mountains, forests,highlands with the famous highland cattle, lowlands with the crops islands off the coast and many many settlements and castles. They refered to the Atlases again to locate rivers and mountains using the key to identify these features.
London
After listening to the story 'Katie in London' and discussing the places visited by Katie we looked at some images of London. The children worked in small groups sorting the pictures. They chose their own criteria - old buildings, modern buildings, bridges, ways of travelling, where you can see the river and the Queen's houses were some of the ways the children decided to sort them.
Map Detectives
The children had to find the capital cities of each of the countries of the United Kingdom by using the keys to help them to locate countries then capital cities.
An Understanding of Scale
The children looked at Google Earth, zoomed out from their street to their town, their country, then continent then their planet.
